Chapter 11 - The Safehouse

The SUV sped through the rain-drenched streets of New York, bypassing the upscale neighborhood of the Manhattan penthouse entirely.
Sophie clutched the titanium flash drive in her palm, her chest heaving as the adrenaline slowly began to recede, leaving behind a cold, shivering exhaustion.
"Where are we going?" Sophie asked, glancing over at Alexander as he maneuvered the vehicle through a maze of dimly lit industrial streets.
"Not the penthouse," Alexander replied, his eyes fixed on the road, scanning the rearview mirror for any signs of pursuit.
"Arthur knows our location there. If he managed to breach the private elevator once, he can do it again. We need a secure location where his tracking algorithms can't touch us."
Twenty minutes later, the SUV turned down a secluded, tree-lined driveway in an old historic estate tucked away near the Hudson River, far from the gleaming skyscrapers of the financial district.
A grand, ivy-covered stone carriage house stood at the end of the lane, hidden behind wrought-iron gates and towering oak trees.
"Whose place is this?" Sophie asked as Alexander parked the vehicle inside a dimly lit stone garage and killed the engine.
"It belongs to Victoria," Alexander said quietly, cutting the headlights.
Sophie froze, her hand hovering over the door handle.
"Victoria's estate?"
"She inherited it from her grandfather," Alexander explained, unlocking his door and stepping out into the steady drizzle.
"She used it as a private art studio and retreat. Nobody in my family knows it exists—not even Arthur."
Sophie stepped out of the SUV, pulling her jacket tightly around her shoulders as she followed Alexander up the stone steps toward heavy oak double doors.
Alexander unlocked the heavy deadbolt, pushing the door open to reveal a spacious, warmly lit loft filled with easels, oil paintings, and towering bookshelves.
It was artistic, chaotic, and deeply personal—a stark contrast to the cold, sterile minimalism of the Manhattan penthouse.
"We're safe here for tonight," Alexander said, walking over to an antique stone fireplace and flicking a switch that ignited a cozy, gas-powered fire.
Sophie walked slowly toward a large oak work table in the center of the room, laying the small titanium flash drive down on the wood surface.
"She knew she was in danger," Sophie whispered, looking around the room as if expecting Victoria to step out from behind one of the canvas easels.
"She knew your father was coming after her, and she left this entire trail so that someone would finish what she started."
Alexander walked over, standing beside her as he looked down at the tiny engraved drive.
"And that someone is us," he said softly.
He reached out, his fingers brushing against Sophie's hand as he picked up the flash drive.
For a moment, the tension in the room shifted, the cold corporate conspiracy fading into the heavy, electric awareness of the two people standing alone in the dark.
Sophie looked up, meeting Alexander's dark, intense eyes.

"Why did she choose me, Alexander?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
"Why did your missing fiancée leave her entire legacy in the hands of a waitress she had never met?"
