Chapter 12 - The Secret Connection

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

He walked over to a heavy oak desk in the corner of the studio, pulling out an older-model encrypted laptop from a locked drawer and setting it beside the flash drive.

"She didn't choose you at random, Sophie," Alexander said, sliding the titanium drive into the laptop's side port.

"What do you mean?" Sophie asked, stepping closer as the screen flickered to life, displaying a secure login prompt requiring a biometric thumbprint and an alphanumeric key.

"When Victoria first started investigating Grant Industries' illicit medical funding three years ago, she hit a dead end," Alexander explained, tapping a series of keys.

"The financial records were locked behind a proprietary encryption protocol used exclusively by my father's private medical subsidiary—the Reed-Sterling Foundation."

Sophie’s breath caught in her throat.

"Reed-Sterling? That's my last name. My mother's maiden name."

Alexander turned to look at her, his expression grim.

"Your mother, Catherine Reed, wasn't just a patient, Sophie. Twenty years ago, she was the chief senior accountant for Reed-Sterling Medical before the company was mysteriously acquired and liquidated by Arthur Grant."

Sophie staggered backward, colliding gently against the edge of an easel.

"My mother... worked for Arthur Grant?"

"She didn't just work for him," Alexander revealed, clicking a file on the decrypted screen that opened a scanned photograph of a younger Catherine Reed standing alongside Arthur Grant and a younger woman.

"She was the whistleblower who tried to expose my father's illegal patient-funding schemes two decades ago. Before she could testify, she was involved in a mysterious hit-and-run accident that left her permanently disabled and wiped her memory of the entire event."

The room seemed to spin around Sophie.

All the pieces of her life—her mother's endless medical debt, the mysterious anonymous payments, her own quiet existence downtown—were suddenly revealed to be nothing more than collateral damage in a thirty-year war led by Arthur Grant.

"And Victoria found out," Sophie whispered, tears welling in her eyes as the horrifying truth settled over her.

"Victoria discovered that my mother was the original whistleblower," Alexander nodded solemnly.

"And when my father realized Victoria was digging up the old case, he targeted her the exact same way he tried to silence your mother twenty years ago."

Sophie looked down at the glowing laptop screen, a fierce, burning resolve replacing the fear in her heart.

"Then we don't just use this flash drive to save your company, Alexander," Sophie said, her voice steady and resolute.

"We use it to destroy him."
