Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The heavy silence of the penthouse pressed down on Sophie like a physical weight long after Alexander retreated to his private study on the upper level.

She paced back and forth across the expanse of the master guest suite, the thick Persian rug muffling her footsteps.

The diamond ring sat mockingly on the bedside table, catching the neon glow of the city lights pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"He's hiding something massive," Sophie muttered to herself, wrapping her arms tightly around her waist as she shivered against the chill of the climate-controlled air.

Victoria Vance.

A missing woman.

A cryptic message left behind for a stranger.

It all pointed to a conspiracy far deeper than a simple corporate inheritance battle.

Deciding she needed air—or at least a glass of water—she quietly slipped out of the suite and padded down the dimly lit hallway toward the kitchen.

As she passed the grand staircase leading to the upper floor, she noticed a narrow corridor branching off toward the western wing of the penthouse—an area Alexander had explicitly told her not to enter.

A heavy oak door stood slightly ajar at the end of the hallway, a faint sliver of yellow light cutting across the dark hardwood floor.

Curiosity warred with common sense, and curiosity won.

Walking stealthily on her tiptoes, Sophie approached the door and peered inside.

It wasn't a study or a storage room.

It was a high-tech surveillance and archival command center.

Monitors lined the walls, displaying live security feeds of the streets surrounding the building, the lobby, and various angles of the penthouse itself.

In the center of the room sat a massive corkboard covered in photographs, newspaper clippings, red yarn, and printed financial transactions.

At the center of the web was a photograph of Victoria Vance, her smiling face circled in bold red marker.

Beside Victoria's photo was a cropped snapshot of Sophie herself, taken months before they had ever met.

"What are you doing in here?"

Alexander’s voice boomed from the doorway, cold and sharp as a razor blade.

Sophie jumped, spinning around to find him standing in the shadow of the doorframe, his expression thunderous.

"You've been watching me," Sophie accused, pointing a trembling finger at the board.

"Long before we met at that restaurant. You didn't just stumble across me, Alexander."

"No, I didn't," Alexander admitted, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him with a heavy click.

"Victoria didn't just leave a note behind with your name, Sophie. She left a digital footprint that led straight to your bank records."

Sophie’s breath hitched.

"My bank records? What does my life have to do with a missing socialite?"

May you like

"Everything," Alexander said, stepping closer until she was trapped between him and the wall of monitors.

"Because three days before Victoria vanished, she wired fifty thousand dollars from her secret account directly into your mother's hospital fund."
