Chapter 6 - The Midnight Intruder

The crimson emergency lights cast long, jagged shadows across the high-tech command center as the security monitors flickered violently.
On screen two, the private elevator indicator flashed a bright, angry amber light, signaling that the override code had been entered from the main basement terminal.
"How did he bypass the biometric locks?" Sophie whispered, her fingers digging into the fabric of Alexander's sleeve as panic threatened to overwhelm her.
"My father doesn't need biometrics when he has the master override codes he wrote into the building's architecture ten years ago," Alexander growled, his jaw tightening into a hard line.
He yanked open the metal lockbox beneath the desk, pulling out a heavy, matte-black Glock pistol and checking the magazine with a practiced, lethal click.
Sophie's eyes widened at the sight of the weapon.
"Are you planning to shoot your own father?"
"If he threatens what is mine, I will do whatever is necessary," Alexander replied coldly, sliding the safety off before turning his intense gaze back to her.
"Listen to me very carefully, Sophie. If you want to survive the next five minutes, you are going to slip out through the service stairwell behind the server racks."
"I'm not leaving you here to face him alone!" Sophie protested, her voice rising in defiance.
"This isn't a boardroom negotiation, Sophie! My father is ruthless, and if he finds you here—linked to Victoria's disappearance and the financial audit—he won't just ruin you; he will bury you," Alexander snapped, grabbing her by the shoulders and giving her a firm shake.
"Go! Now!"
Before she could argue further, the heavy oak door of the study rattled violently as the electronic lock buzzed, shorting out under a high-voltage surge.
With a sickening crunch, the reinforced timber gave way, and the door swung wide open to reveal a tall, silver-haired man flanked by two massive private security guards in slate-gray suits.
Arthur Grant stepped into the room.
He was in his late sixties, with sharp, hawk-like eyes and an expensive tailored suit that radiated absolute power and ancient wealth.
A thin, sardonic smile played across his lips as he looked past Alexander to find Sophie standing frozen near the console.
"Well, well," Arthur drawled, his voice carrying an icy, aristocratic cadence that commanded the entire room.
"It seems my dutiful son has chosen a companion to warm his bed during his final days of corporate freedom."
Alexander stepped directly in front of Sophie, shielding her from view as he raised the pistol, locking the barrel squarely on his father's chest.
"Step back, Arthur," Alexander warned, his voice dangerously low.
"This is private property, and you are trespassing."
Arthur didn't even flinch at the sight of the gun barrel.
Instead, he chuckled softly, waving a dismissive hand at his armed guards, who prudently kept their distance.
"Put the toy away, Alexander. You inherited my temper, but thankfully, you never quite mastered my lack of restraint," Arthur mocked, stepping closer despite the weapon.
"Do you honestly think you can intimidate me with a pistol in your own penthouse?"
"Try me," Alexander hissed, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger.
"I wouldn't recommend it, son," Arthur replied, his smile fading into a mask of pure cold malice as he pulled a small, encrypted tablet from his breast pocket and tapped the screen.
"Because the moment that bullet leaves the chamber, an automated data packet containing every single illicit transaction, every medical shell corporation, and Victoria Vance's true autopsy report will be broadcasted directly to the Department of Justice and the federal press corps."
Alexander froze, the color draining entirely from his face.
Sophie gasped behind him, her hands flying to her mouth as the terrible truth crashed over them like a tidal wave.

"You... you killed her," Alexander whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and uncontainable rage.
"Victoria didn't disappear. You murdered her."
