Chapter 17 - The Boardroom Coup

The mahogany boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Grant Industries was dead silent, save for the hum of the central air conditioning and the rhythmic ticking of an antique grandfather clock in the corner.
Twenty-four members of the board of directors sat around the massive conference table, their expressions tense and uncertain.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Grant, his hands steepened beneath his chin, projecting an aura of absolute authority that he had maintained for three decades.
The double doors at the far end of the room swung open with a sharp click.
Alexander walked in first, his posture straight, his expression calm and unyielding.
Behind him walked Sophie, wearing a sharp navy pantsuit, carrying a leather folio containing certified copies of the federal indictments and the decrypted flash drive contents.
"What is the meaning of this interruption?" one of the senior board members demanded, adjusting his glasses nervously.
"This meeting was called exclusively to discuss emergency corporate restructuring ahead of Alexander's thirty-seventh birthday."
"It was called," Alexander said, his voice cutting cleanly through the murmur of the room as he pulled out the chair directly opposite his father, "to address the imminent collapse of this company due to criminal negligence and financial fraud."
Arthur let out a low, cold laugh, leaning back in his leather chair.
"You brought a few doctored files from a federal prosecutor eager to make a name for himself, and you think the board will hand over controlling shares to a boy playing house with a waitress?"
"They aren't doctored files, Arthur," Sophie said calmly, stepping forward and opening her leather folio to lay copies of the encrypted ledgers across the mahogany table.
"These are the exact subsidiary transfer logs that prove Grant Industries has been funneling illegal slush funds through regional medical clinics for over twenty-five years—including the clinic that nearly killed my mother."
Murmurs erupted around the table.
Several board members leaned over to inspect the documents, their faces turning pale as they recognized the internal routing codes and authorization signatures belonging to Arthur Grant himself.
"This is an outrage!" another director shouted, standing up.
"Even if these allegations have merit, handing leadership to Alexander right now will trigger a hostile shareholder panic!"
"Not if the board votes unanimously to invoke Clause 14 of the corporate charter," Alexander countered smoothly, pulling a crisp legal document from his briefcase.
"Clause 14 allows for the immediate suspension of any executive facing federal indictment for corporate homicide and financial fraud, transferring full voting control to the primary heir effective immediately."
Alexander slammed the document onto the table right in front of his father.
"The federal indictment was filed twenty minutes ago."

Silence descended upon the boardroom like a falling anvil.
Every eye turned toward Arthur Grant, waiting to see how the titanium-willed patriarch would respond to checkmate.
