Chapter 15 - The Final Stand

Sophie scrambled through the narrow, stone-lined cellar tunnel, the sound of muffled gunfire echoing behind her like distant thunder.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she stumbled blindly through the damp darkness, guided only by the faint smell of river water ahead.

She burst out through a rusted iron grate into the cool night air, tumbling onto the weathered wooden planks of the private river dock.

Bobbing gently against the wooden pylons was a small, motorized speedboat tied to a weathered post.

She scrambled aboard, her hands trembling as she untied the heavy mooring ropes.

Where was he?

Why hadn't Alexander followed her through the tunnel?

Panic surged through her veins.

She grabbed the ignition key hanging from the dashboard, turning it just as heavy footsteps thudded onto the wooden dock behind her.

Sophie spun around, raising a heavy metal oar defensively.

A tall figure emerged from the shadows of the tunnel exit, panting heavily, blood staining the shoulder of his black coat.

"Alexander!" Sophie screamed, dropping the oar and rushing forward to grab his arm as he stumbled onto the boat.

"Are you hit?"

"It's just a graze," Alexander panted, collapsing into the pilot's seat as he slammed the throttle forward.

The speedboat roared to life, kicking up a massive white wake of river water as it surged away from the dock into the safety of the dark Hudson River currents.

Behind them, flashlights swept across the empty wooden pier as Arthur’s guards emerged too late, firing impotently into the churning water.

Alexander guided the boat smoothly toward the Manhattan skyline, the distant glittering lights reflecting across the dark surface of the water.

He cut the engine as they drifted into a secluded cove beneath the shadow of the George Washington Bridge, letting out a long, exhausted breath.

Sophie sat beside him in the small cabin, pulling the titanium flash drive from her pocket and holding it up in the pale moonlight.

"We have it," she whispered, a quiet triumph finally breaking through the exhaustion.

"We have everything we need."

Alexander turned to look at her, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his lips as he reached out to take her hand.

"Ninety days, Sophie," he murmured softly.

"We survived the first week."

Sophie looked down at the diamond ring still glittering on her finger, realizing with a sudden, overwhelming clarity that what had started as a cold, manipulative business contract had transformed into something far more dangerous, far more complicated, and entirely real.

"And ninety days from now?" Sophie asked, her eyes locking onto his.

Alexander leaned closer, his voice dropping into a warm, steady promise.
