Chapter 5 - The Wire Transfer

The words hung in the air between them like a detonating bomb.
Sophie’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
Fifty thousand dollars?
Her mother's hospital debt had been mounting for years, paid off in mysterious, anonymous installments that the clinic administration claimed came from an anonymous charitable trust.
"That's impossible," Sophie managed to breathe out, pressing her back against the edge of a computer console.
"My mother's bills were paid by a foundation. Not a socialite I've never even met."
"Foundations are easily used as laundering shells," Alexander said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register as he tapped a key on the console.
A financial ledger popped up on the central screen, displaying a trail of routing numbers and bank logs.
"Victoria traced money flowing from Grant Industries' subsidiary accounts directly into your mother's hospital. Then, three days later, she disappeared."
Sophie stared at the screen, her mind spinning as the pieces of a terrifying puzzle began to assemble themselves.
"You think your father is involved," Sophie realized, looking up into Alexander's dark, haunted eyes.
"I know he is," Alexander replied, his jaw tight.
"My father, Arthur Grant, controls the board, the subsidiary shells, and half the politicians in Manhattan. Victoria discovered that Grant Industries was funneling illicit funds through medical institutions, using patients as financial fronts."
"And my mother?" Sophie's voice cracked, a wave of maternal panic washing over her.
"Is my mother in danger?"
"Not yet," Alexander assured her, though his eyes betrayed his own anxiety.
"Which is why you are here. My father thinks he has cornered me with this marriage ultimatum. He thinks he can force me to hand over the company control by keeping me distracted."
"And instead, you turned the tables by hiring the one person tied to Victoria's final investigation," Sophie said, a bitter laugh escaping her lips.
"You didn't just hire a fake wife, Alexander. You hired a human shield."
"I hired a partner," Alexander corrected sharply, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made it difficult to breathe.
"A partner who is now just as deep in this target zone as I am."
Before Sophie could process the gravity of his words, a loud, jarring alarm echoed through the penthouse.
The red emergency lights mounted along the ceiling began to strobe rhythmically, casting an eerie, crimson glow across the room.
Alexander spun around to the main monitor.

"What is that?" Sophie asked, grabbing his sleeve.
"Someone just breached the private elevator security override," Alexander said, his face draining of color as he reached for a heavy metal lockbox beneath the desk.
