Chapter 18 - The Fall of the Patriarch

Arthur Grant stared down at the legal document resting on the mahogany table, his hawk-like eyes scanning the federal seal stamped at the bottom of the page.
For a long, agonizing moment, nobody moved.
Then, a slow, bitter smile crept across Arthur’s face.
"You think this makes you a winner, Alexander?" Arthur whispered, his voice dangerously low as he looked up at his son.
"You think stripping me of my title changes what is in your blood? You inherited my ambition, my ruthlessness, and my enemies. The moment you sit in this chair, you become me."
"I am nothing like you," Alexander replied coldly, his gaze locking onto his father's without a flicker of doubt.
"And starting today, this company operates under a completely new ethical standard."
Arthur slowly stood up, smoothing the lapel of his tailored jacket with deliberate slowness.
He didn't look defeated; he looked like a predator retreating into the shadows to bide his time.
"Enjoy your throne while it lasts, son," Arthur said quietly as he walked slowly toward the boardroom doors.
"The corporate world is a shark tank. And you just invited a stranger right into the water with you."
As the heavy doors clicked shut behind Arthur Grant, a collective breath seemed to escape the entire room.
The senior board member who had spoken earlier cleared his throat awkwardly, looking toward Alexander.
"Well... given the emergency restructuring, I suppose a formal vote on the interim presidency is in order."
Within ten minutes, the unanimous vote was cast.
Alexander Grant was officially confirmed as the undisputed Chief Executive Officer of Grant Industries, completely bypassing the birthday inheritance deadline that his father had weaponized against him.
As the board members filed out of the room one by one, the heavy mahogany doors closed behind the last director, leaving Alexander and Sophie alone in the vast, echoing space.
Sophie let out a long, shaky breath, her shoulders sagging slightly as the immense weight of the past week finally began to lift.
"It's over," Sophie whispered, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows to look out over the sprawling Manhattan skyline.
"We actually beat him."
Alexander walked up behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist and resting his chin softly against her shoulder.
"We beat him," Alexander agreed, his voice warm and steady against her ear.
"Thanks to you."
Sophie leaned back against his chest, feeling the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.
"Does this mean our ninety-day contract is officially null and void?" she asked softly, a playful hint of curiosity in her tone.
Alexander paused, his arms tightening slightly around her waist.
"Well, technically, we still have eighty-nine days left on the marriage agreement," Alexander murmured, turning her gently to face him.
"And the press is still convinced we're deeply, passionately in love."
Sophie looked up into his dark, intense eyes, a slow smile spreading across her face.
"Is that right?"
May you like
"Completely," Alexander whispered, leaning down.
"And honestly... I don't think I have any intention of filing for divorce."
