Chapter 1 - The Shimmering Cage

The grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel shimmered beneath towering crystal chandeliers.

Thousands of tiny glass prisms caught the artificial light, scattering golden beams across the polished marble floor.

It was the social event of the decade.

Every influential figure in the city was present.

Politicians who controlled the laws.

Celebrities whose faces dominated every screen.

Venture capitalists who moved billions of dollars with a single stroke of a pen.

They mingled in tight, exclusive circles.

Waiters dressed in pristine white tuxedos glided effortlessly through the crowd.

They carried heavy silver trays loaded with vintage champagne and delicacies imported from across the globe.

The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, Cuban cigars, and quiet arrogance.

Laughter echoed off the high, gilded ceilings.

But despite the grandeur, the atmosphere felt tightly scripted.

Every smile was a calculated business move.

Every handshake was a potential partnership.

It was a world built entirely on status and appearance.

At the center of this sparkling universe sat Richard Sterling.

The billionaire was famous across the entire country.

His conglomerate, Sterling Enterprises, dominated the technology and energy sectors.

His net worth was estimated in the tens of billions.

His sharp, stern face regularly graced the covers of international business magazines.

People spoke of him as if he were a myth.

An untouchable king.

Ambitious entrepreneurs traveled thousands of miles just for a chance to stand in his presence.

Just to shake his hand for three seconds.

Tonight, Richard was hosting his annual global charity gala.

The event was designed to raise funds for underprivileged children.

Yet, ironic as it was, no poor person had ever stepped foot inside these doors.

The entry ticket alone cost more than an average family earned in a year.

Richard sat at the VIP table, surrounded by city officials and board members.

His silver-white hair was perfectly styled.

His tailored charcoal suit was worth a fortune.

He nodded politely to the mayor, who was speaking loudly about a new development project.

Richard smiled.

He laughed at the right times.

He answered questions with effortless grace.

But inside, he felt completely hollow.

The wealth.

The fame.

The endless accolades.

To him, they had become nothing more than a golden cage.

He stared at the bubbles rising in his champagne flute.

He wondered, not for the first time, how his life had become so cold.

Twenty years ago, he had possessed nothing but a dream and a heart full of love.

Now, he possessed the world, but his heart was empty.

The mayor raised his glass to make another toast to Richard’s generosity.

Richard raised his own glass in return.

Everything seemed perfect.

The music played on.

The guests laughed.

The cameras flashed.

Until the massive, heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom slowly opened.
