Chapter 11 - The Shadow of Betrayal
One afternoon, Richard received a mysterious package at his office.
It was a small, unmarked USB drive.
He plugged it into his secure computer.
On the drive was a single audio file.
It was a recording of a phone conversation.
Richard clicked play.
“He thinks he’s won,” Victoria’s voice said on the recording. “But he has no idea what Sarah was really doing before she died.”
Another voice answered, a voice Richard recognized as Marcus, his head of corporate security.
A man he had trusted for fifteen years.
“What do you mean?” Marcus asked.
“Sarah didn't just write a letter to Richard,” Victoria sneered. “She had proof. Proof of the illegal offshore accounts his father used to fund the startup. If those documents are released, Sterling Enterprises will go bankrupt. And Richard will go to prison.”
“Where are the documents?” Marcus asked.
“Sarah hid them in her old apartment. In the floorboards. Find them, Marcus. Before Richard does. If we get those documents, we can force Richard to step down and give us control of the company.”
The recording ended.
Richard sat in absolute silence, his blood running cold.
Marcus.
His own head of security was a traitor.
And Sarah... Sarah had held a secret that could destroy everything he had built.
Not to hurt him, but perhaps to protect herself from his father’s threats.
Richard stood up, his mind racing.
He had to get to Sarah's old apartment.
