Chapter 4 - The Photograph

Emily carefully held out the white envelope.
Her tiny hands were clean, but her nails were short and worn.
Richard hesitated.
For the first time in decades, the billionaire felt a sudden, sharp pang of unease.
His instincts, honed through years of corporate warfare, warned him.
This was not a charity stunt.
This was not a game.
The envelope looked old.
The edges were yellowed, as if it had been stored in a dark drawer for a very long time.
There was no name written on the front.
There was no return address on the back.
It was completely blank.
Slowly, Richard reached out his hand.
His fingers brushed against hers as he took the envelope.
Her skin was freezing.
He carefully tore open the top of the envelope.
He reached inside and pulled out a single piece of glossy paper.
It was a photograph.
The moment his eyes locked onto the image, Richard’s entire body went rigid.
The breath caught in his throat.
The lingering warmth in his face completely drained away, leaving him deathly pale.
His fingers began to tremble, making the photograph shake.
The silence in the ballroom deepened.
You could hear a pin drop on the marble floor.
Guests exchanged bewildered, worried looks.
They had seen Richard Sterling face aggressive takeovers, hostile senate hearings, and economic crises.
He had always been a rock.
An emotionless machine.
But now, he looked as if he had just seen a ghost.
The photograph showed a young woman standing on a wooden dock beside a calm, blue lake.
She was wearing a simple yellow sundress.
Her long, dark brown hair was blowing gently in the wind.
She was laughing, looking directly at the camera with a brilliant, joyful smile.
Richard recognized that smile instantly.
It was engraved into the deepest chambers of his soul.
It was Sarah.
The love of his life.
The woman he had cherished more than his own existence.
The woman he had lost twenty years ago.
Richard stared at the photograph, his vision suddenly blurring.
Tears, hot and heavy, began to well up in his eyes.
He had believed she was gone from his life forever.
He had believed she had forgotten him.
Emily watched him quietly, her blue eyes filled with a deep, understanding empathy.
"My mother told me you would recognize her," Emily whispered.
Richard’s voice was barely a croak.
"Where... where did you get this?"
"From my mom," Emily said.
The billionaire’s hands shook so violently he almost dropped the picture.
May you like
"What... what is your mother's name?"
"Sarah," the little girl replied.
