Chapter 19 - Passing the Torch

After the gala, Richard and Emily walked through the quiet park.
The city lights twinkled in the distance, reflected in the calm waters of the nearby lake.
"You gave a great speech, Dad," Emily said, linking her arm through his.
"I meant every word, sweetheart," Richard replied, covering her hand with his. "I am so proud of you, Emily. You are going to do amazing things at university."
"I want to help people, Dad. Just like you and Mom did. I want to use the law to protect families, to make sure nobody has to suffer the way we did."
Richard smiled, his eyes misty.
"You will. I have no doubt about that."
He stopped and pulled a small, familiar object from his jacket pocket.
It was the old, worn white envelope.
The photograph of Sarah on the dock was still inside.
"I want you to have this," Richard said, placing the envelope in her hands. "To remind you of where you came from. And of the mother who loved you so much she changed the world to save you."
Emily took the envelope, her fingers tracing the worn edges.
"Thank you, Dad," she whispered, her eyes filling with tears. "I’ll keep it with me always."
They stood by the lake, watching the water ripple gently in the night breeze.
