Chapter 6 - A Devastating Truth

Richard read the words silently, his eyes devouring the ink.

"Richard,

If you are reading this, it means my time has run out, and Emily has found you.

I never stopped loving you, Richard. Not for a single day.

I wanted to tell you the truth so many times, but your family... they made it impossible.

When you left for Europe, your father visited me.

He threatened to ruin my family, to destroy my father’s business, if I did not disappear.

And then, I found out I was pregnant.

I raised our daughter, Emily, alone. She is the light of my life, and she has your eyes.

I never told her who you were because I wanted to protect her from the world that tore us apart.

But now, as the illness takes me, I cannot leave her alone in this world.

She deserves to know her father. She deserves to be safe.

Please do not blame yourself for the years we lost.

Just love her, Richard. Love her the way I always hoped you would.

Always yours,

Sarah."

The paper became damp as Richard's tears fell onto the ink.

A profound, suffocating anger mixed with his intense grief.

His own family.

His own father, who had passed away ten years ago, had orchestrated this tragedy.

They had stolen twenty years of his life.

They had forced the woman he loved to live and die in poverty.

They had kept him from his own daughter.

Richard looked up from the letter.

He looked at Emily.

She was staring at him, her small lower lip trembling slightly.

She was terrified.

She was waiting to see if this powerful, wealthy stranger would reject her.

Richard did not care about the gala anymore.

He did not care about the politicians, the media, or his reputation.

He stood up so quickly his heavy velvet chair scraped loudly against the marble.

Emily flinched, taking a small step back.

"Emily," Richard whispered.

He bypassed the table, dropped to his knees on the hard floor, and threw his arms around her.

He pulled her tiny body against his chest, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure on earth.

He buried his face in her tangled hair.

"I'm so sorry," he wept openly. "I'm so sorry, my sweet girl."

The entire ballroom erupted.

Not into gossip, but into tears.

Socialites wiped their eyes with silk handkerchiefs.

Hardened business executives looked away, swallowing back tears.

Even the stern security guards turned their heads, deeply moved by the scene.

Emily hesitated for a fraction of a second.

Then, she wrapped her small arms around Richard’s neck.

She squeezed him tightly.

For the first time in her life, she felt safe.

She felt the warmth of a father.
