Chapter 17 - The Promise on the Hill

The cemetery was peaceful, the trees shedding their golden leaves onto the green grass.

They walked hand in hand to a simple granite headstone.

Emily knelt down and carefully placed the flowers beside the headstone.

"Hi, Mom," Emily whispered, her voice soft and sweet. "I missed you today."

Richard stood behind her, his hand resting gently on her shoulder.

Tears welled in his eyes, but they were no longer tears of bitter grief.

They were tears of gratitude.

"I brought Dad with me," Emily continued. "He’s taking really good care of me, just like you wanted. We live in a nice house now. And Grandpa is with us too."

Richard knelt down beside his daughter.

He reached out and touched the cold stone.

"Thank you, Sarah," Richard whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Thank you for bringing her to me. I promise you, I will spend the rest of my life making sure she is happy and safe. I will love her with everything I have."

A gentle breeze blew through the trees, rustling the yellow flowers.

It felt like a soft touch.

A blessing from the woman they both loved.

Emily wrapped her arms around Richard’s neck, and he held her tightly.

They stood there for a long time, watching the sun set over the hills.
