Chapter 2 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy doors did not creak, but the sudden draft of cold night air made the nearest guests turn.

A small figure stepped inside the threshold.

She was a little girl.

She couldn’t have been older than eight.

She stood perfectly still, looking at the massive, glittering room.

Her appearance was a stark, jarring contrast to everything around her.

Her dress was made of cheap, faded cotton.

It was worn at the hem, the colors washed out by years of use.

Her small leather shoes were heavily scuffed at the toes.

Her brown hair was tangled, looking as though it hadn't been brushed properly in days.

She had no coat, despite the freezing autumn wind howling outside the glass doors.

In her right hand, she clutched a small, plain white envelope.

It was sealed.

The edges of the paper were slightly crumpled from her tight grip.

For a moment, the music continued to play.

But slowly, the silence began to spread like a drop of ink in water.

The conversations nearest to the entrance died down.

Guests turned their heads, their champagne glasses frozen halfway to their lips.

Whispers began to ripple through the crowd.

"Who let her in?"

"Is this a joke?"

"Where are her parents?"

"Look at her clothes... she looks like a beggar."

The whispers grew louder, a low hum of disapproval and confusion.

A security guard, standing near the marble pillars, noticed the disturbance.

He frowned, adjusting his earpiece.

He immediately began walking toward the little girl.

His footsteps were heavy and purposeful.

He intended to escort her out of the building before any of the high-paying guests grew uncomfortable.

But before the guard could reach her, the little girl did something unexpected.

She did not look afraid.

She did not cry.

She did not run away from the imposing man in the uniform.

Instead, she began to walk forward.

She did not walk toward the grand buffet.

She did not look at the giant ice sculptures.

She did not look at the stage where the orchestra played.

She walked with a quiet, unwavering determination.

Straight toward the center of the room.

Straight toward the VIP table.

Straight toward Richard Sterling.

The security guard paused, momentarily confused by her sheer confidence.

The guests stepped aside, drawing their expensive garments away from her as if she might stain them.

Every eye in the room followed her slow, steady path.

She walked like someone who had a very important task to complete.

A task that could not be delayed.

She did not hesitate once.

She marched past senators, models, and international bankers.

And finally, she stopped directly in front of the billionaire’s table.
