Chapter 10 - The Vance Family Secret

Thomas Vance limped slowly up the wooden porch stairs, his weathered face etched with the deep lines of a man who had carried a shameful family secret for thirty years.
Luca remained standing in front of Claire, his hand resting casually near his holster, his dark eyes fixed with cold suspicion on the older man.
"You're a long way from your timber mill, Thomas," Luca said, his voice level and devoid of warmth. "And trespassers don't usually live long enough to explain their itinerary in these woods."
Thomas stopped two steps away, holding the manila envelope out flatly in his palms.
"I didn't come here to start a war with the Moretti syndicate, Luca," Thomas said, his voice raspy and tired. "I came here because of my brother Julian—and because I found out what that viper Vanessa Bellini almost dragged you into."
Luca didn't take the envelope immediately. "Explain."
Thomas let out a heavy, shuddering sigh, his eyes drifting momentarily toward Claire before returning to Luca.
"Julian has been bleeding the Moretti family blind for the last eighteen months, yes," Thomas admitted bitterly. "He always was a greedy, ambitious bastard who thought he deserved an empire he never earned. But the plot to overthrow you wasn't his idea, Luca. It was Vanessa's from day one."
Luca’s jaw tightened. "I already know that. She wanted the syndicate's Swiss routing keys."
"She wanted more than the money," Thomas corrected, stepping closer and dropping the manila envelope onto the cedar table between them. "Open it, Luca. Look at what my family buried thirty years ago."
Luca’s gaze flicked down to the envelope. With a quick, fluid motion, he pulled back the cardboard clasp and slid out a stack of yellowed, vintage photographs and a certified birth certificate dated 1995.
Claire leaned forward slightly, her eyes scanning the faded documents resting under Luca’s hand.
The birth certificate listed the name Vanessa Bellini, but the parentage section listed entirely different names—along with an adoption seal from a private Chicago psychiatric institution.
"What am I looking at?" Luca demanded, his voice dropping dangerously low.
"Vanessa isn't a high-society heiress, Luca," Thomas revealed, his voice shaking with suppressed anger. "Her real name is Vanessa Sterling. Her father was a low-level accountant who tried to embezzle five million dollars from the Moretti syndicate back in the nineties—before your father took over."
Luca’s eyes went wide as the historical context clicked violently into place in his mind.
"My father executed her father for embezzlement," Luca whispered, the pieces falling together like a blood-stained puzzle.
"He didn't just execute him," Thomas continued grimly. "The accountant committed suicide in his holding cell before your father could interrogate him about where the money was hidden. Vanessa was six years old when it happened. She spent the next twenty years living in foster care, swearing an oath that she would infiltrate the Moretti family, marry the heir, and burn your entire empire down to the ash."
The porch fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
The wind rustled through the pine branches overhead, sounding like the whispers of ghosts long buried in Chicago’s underworld history.
Luca stared down at the vintage photographs of a little girl with dark, haunted eyes standing outside a rundown tenement house.
Every single move Vanessa had made—the engagement, the seduction of Julian Vance, the theft of the syndicate deeds—wasn't just ordinary greed.
It was a thirty-year-old vendetta executed with chilling, psychotic patience.
"She didn't just want my money," Luca said softly, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, cold fury. "She wanted to destroy everything bearing the Moretti name."
Thomas nodded slowly, turning back toward his truck. "I thought you had a right to know who you were sleeping next to, Luca. Do whatever you want with that information. I'm just an old man trying to wash the stain of the Vance name clean before I die."
Without another word, Thomas turned around, climbed back into his pickup truck, and drove down the gravel road, disappearing into the vast wilderness as quickly as he had arrived.
Luca stood motionless for a long time, staring down at the vintage photographs scattered across the cedar table.
Claire slowly reached out, her bandaged fingers gently touching the edge of the birth certificate.

"She wasn't just after your fortune, Luca," Claire whispered, looking up into his dark, troubled eyes. "She was trying to finish a war that started before she was even old enough to understand it."
Luca turned his head, looking down at Claire with a gaze so intense it felt as though he were reading her soul.
