Chapter 2 - The Ten-Minute Window

At exactly ten minutes past ten in the evening, the final luxury sedan belonging to the city councilman rolled down the paved driveway and disappeared into the relentless Chicago downpour.
The heavy oak front doors clicked shut, sealing the Moretti estate in a deceptive, velvety silence.
In the second-floor master suite, Vanessa Bellini stood before the gilded antique vanity mirror, unpinning her diamond-encrusted earrings with hands that she could no longer prevent from trembling.
Her reflection showed a woman at the absolute pinnacle of high-society success, marrying the wealthiest, most powerful underworld titan in the Midwest within three short weeks.
Yet, her stomach was tied in agonizing knots of pure terror.
Downstairs, in the subterranean basement level of the mansion, Luca Moretti sat in total darkness inside his private, soundproofed security monitoring room.
He waited with the motionless discipline of a sniper lying in high grass.
He did not check his watch.
He did not pace the floor.
He simply stared at the multi-screen surveillance console built into the custom walnut desk, counting down the precise intervals in his head.
Three minutes.
That was the exact amount of time he allowed for the household staff to settle into their quarters and for Vanessa to make her move.
At precisely ten minutes and fourteen seconds past ten, the red indicator light on Camera Hallway-2 flickered to life.
The screen illuminated the second-floor landing outside the master bedroom suite.
Vanessa appeared in the frame, wearing a long silk dressing gown of midnight blue, her bare feet making zero sound on the plush Persian runner.
She paused at the corner of the corridor, turning her head sharply to check both directions.
The hallway was completely empty, bathed in the soft, amber glow of wall-mounted sconces.
Satisfied that she was entirely alone, Vanessa slipped quickly down the auxiliary corridor leading toward the east wing—the direction of the high-security service elevators and the staff lockers.
Luca leaned forward, resting his heavy forearms on the edge of the mahogany desk, his dark eyes narrowing as he watched every fluid, calculated movement of his fiancée.
"Pause," Luca commanded the empty room.
The digital playback froze instantly, capturing Vanessa mid-stride, her face cast in sharp, suspicious shadows.
"Bring up the afternoon logs," Luca ordered into the encrypted intercom connected to his elite private security detail stationed in the guest house.
"Already queued, Boss," the voice of his head of security, a hulking ex-military specialist named Marcus, crackled through the speaker. "Pulling the 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM archives from the second-floor east wing corridor now."
The main monitor blinked, shifting from the live feed to the recorded footage of the previous afternoon.
The timestamp in the corner read 4:16 P.M.
On the screen, Claire Dawson appeared carrying an enormous stack of freshly laundered linen sheets cradled against her chest.
Both of her hands were working with normal dexterity, gripping the fabric securely.
There was no black compression glove.
There was no bandage.
There was no swelling.
Claire walked steadily down the hallway toward the walk-in linen room, pushed the heavy oak door open with her hip, and stepped inside, vanishing from the direct line of sight of the wide-angle corridor camera.
Thirty seconds later, the second-floor elevator chimed silently, and Vanessa Bellini stepped out into the hallway.
She was dressed in a casual cashmere sweater and designer trousers, her hair pulled back into a sleek, functional ponytail.
Vanessa checked the corridor with the same calculated caution she had displayed just moments ago on the live feed.
She crept toward the open door of the linen room with predatory stealth.
Luca leaned closer to the monitor, his breath hitching slightly in his chest as he watched his bride-to-be slip into the room right behind Claire, pulling the heavy door almost entirely shut behind her.
Four agonizing minutes passed on the timecode ticker at the bottom of the screen.
No audio was recorded in that specific zone, but the visual narrative was more brutal than any spoken words could ever convey.
At 4:21 P.M., the linen room door cracked open.
Vanessa stepped out into the hallway entirely alone.
She paused on the threshold, her face flushed with exertion and adrenaline.
With a deliberate, calculated motion, Vanessa reached into her pocket, pulled out a small brass skeleton key, and inserted it into the heavy deadbolt lock built into the antique door frame.
A sharp click echoed through the silent hallway on the recording as she turned the key, locking Claire Dawson inside a pitch-black, suffocating storage closet.
Vanessa stood there for a second, smoothing down the front of her sweater with cool detachment, before turning around and walking away toward the main staircase.
Luca stopped moving entirely.
His hands curled into massive fists on top of the desk, his knuckles turning stark white as the sheer magnitude of Vanessa’s deception crashed down upon him.
"Pause," Luca whispered, his voice trembling with a suppressed rage so profound that the air in the security room seemed to drop ten degrees.
The image froze again.
Vanessa’s manicured hand was still gripping the brass key in the lock, her expression captured in a moment of pure, unadulterated malice.
"What time does Claire come out?" Luca asked, his voice dead flat, carrying the icy weight of an executioner’s axe.
"Fast-forwarding to the incident timestamp, Boss," Marcus replied from the speaker. "Stand by."
The monitor skipped forward rapidly through eleven long minutes of empty hallway footage.
4:31 P.M.
The digital clock clicked over.
On the screen, the heavy oak door of the linen room shuddered violently.
A muffled, frantic thud echoed against the wood as Claire threw her body weight against the barrier from the inside.
Then, the lock turned from within with a metallic snap, and the door swung open.
Claire stumbled out into the hallway, collapsing against the opposite wall.
Her left hand was pressed tightly across her chest, tucked protectively beneath her apron.
Her face was chalk-white, streaming with silent tears of pain and shock.
And clutched firmly between the trembling fingers of her right hand was something tiny, metallic, and reflective.
Luca stared at the screen, his dark eyes widening as he recognized the object.
"Zoom in on her right hand," Luca ordered, his voice dropping into a harsh rasp. "Maximum resolution."
Marcus manipulated the controls from the remote terminal.
The digital algorithm sharpened the pixels around Claire’s fist until every detail sprang into terrifying clarity on the 4K monitor.
It was a micro-SD memory card.
Nothing else.
No jewelry.
No money.
Just a tiny piece of black plastic and gold contacts holding enough digital data to bring down a criminal empire.
Luca’s voice dropped into a register of deadly quiet.
"What is that?"
"We don't know yet, Boss," Marcus answered honestly, the tension thick in his throat. "The patrol guard who let her out of the closet didn't report seeing it. She must have palmed it the second the door opened."
"Find out," Luca commanded, standing up from his chair so abruptly that the heavy oak furniture scraped loudly against the concrete floor. "Check her locker in the staff quarters right now. Tear the room apart if you have to, but bring me that card."
Five agonizing minutes crawled by while Luca paced the narrow confines of the security bunker like a caged panther.
The encrypted phone on the desk buzzed shrilly, breaking the silence.
Luca snatched the receiver off the cradle instantly.
"Talk to me," he barked.
Marcus’s voice came back through the line, clipped and laced with genuine disbelief.
"We checked Claire’s locker in the basement staff quarters, Boss."
Luca stopped pacing, his boots planted firmly on the floor.
"You found it?"
"Yes, sir. Hidden inside the lining of her winter coat."
"What's on it?" Luca demanded, his heart hammering against his ribs for the first time in over a decade.
A heavy, pregnant pause hung over the phone line before Marcus answered.
"Twenty-seven high-resolution digital photographs, Boss."
Luca’s jaw tightened until his teeth ground together audibly.
"Photographs of what?"
Another pause, longer and more hesitant than the first.
"Mostly nothing important. Housekeeping schedules, grocery inventories, laundry receipts..."
"Mostly?" Luca interrupted, his voice cutting through Marcus’s hesitation like a razor. "Give me the rest of it, Marcus. Now."
Marcus swallowed hard on the other end of the line.
"The last four photographs on the card weren't taken in the staff quarters, Boss. They were taken inside your private study upstairs."
Luca froze completely, the blood rushing in his ears like a violent tidal wave.
"My private study?" Luca repeated, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "Are you entirely certain?"
"Positive," Marcus confirmed. "The background, the custom mahogany shelving, the antique globe—it's unmistakably your private office."
"When were they taken?" Luca asked, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper.
"According to the file metadata, exactly yesterday afternoon while you were attending the dock union negotiations across town."
Luca slowly raised his eyes toward the ceiling, staring straight up through two layers of reinforced concrete and steel toward Vanessa’s bedroom suite directly above his head.
"What do those four photographs show?" Luca demanded, his patience finally snapping under the unbearable weight of betrayal.
Marcus hesitated for a third time, his breath hitching over the encrypted speaker.
"Tell me, Marcus," Luca commanded, leaving no room for argument.
"The first photograph shows Vanessa opening the bottom locked drawer of your mahogany executive desk using a duplicate master key," Marcus reported, reading directly from the secure laptop terminal in the guest house.
Luca said nothing. He didn't curse. He didn't smash anything. He just stood there, absorbing the devastating realization that the woman he had chosen to bear his name and share his bed was nothing more than an apex predator working for his most bitter rivals.
"And the second photograph?" Luca asked, his voice unnaturally calm.
"It shows her removing a thick manila folder containing the offshore Swiss bank routing numbers and corporate shell-company deeds for the entire Moretti syndicate."
Luca’s eyes closed for half a second.
"And the third?"
A much longer, heavier pause stretched across the phone line, filled only with the static hiss of the secure channel.
"Speak, Marcus."
"The third photograph shows Vanessa handing that exact manila folder to an unknown man standing just outside the French doors of your private terrace," Marcus read out, his voice shaking slightly.
Luca’s grip on the telephone receiver tightened so hard that the plastic casing began to crack under the pressure of his bare fingers.
"Who is he?" Luca asked, his voice barely audible, yet vibrating with enough suppressed fury to shatter glass. "Can you see his face?"
"In the third photo, he's wearing a heavy trench coat with the collar turned up," Marcus replied grimly. "We couldn't get a clean angle on his face. But the fourth photograph changes everything."
Luca braced his hand against the edge of the console to steady himself.
"What is in the fourth photograph?"
"The man finally turns around toward the balcony camera as he accepts the folder," Marcus said, the words dropping like lead weights into the silence of the room.
Luca gripped the edge of his desk with both hands, his knuckles turning stark white.
"Who is he, Marcus?"
A sharp intake of breath echoed through the speaker.
"Your best man, Boss. Julian Vance."
Luca went completely, unnaturally silent.
The room around him seemed to vanish, replaced by the crushing realization that the knife in his back had been driven in by the man he trusted more than a brother, hand-in-hand with the woman he had chosen to be his wife.
Before Luca could process the full, catastrophic scope of the betrayal, Marcus’s voice broke through the silence once more, filled with a chilling final discovery.
"Boss... there's something else. Something written on the back of the physical document Vanessa handed to Julian in the photograph."
Luca’s eyes snapped open, blazing with a dark, terrifying fire.
"What?" Luca demanded.
Another agonizing pause stretched across the line before Marcus read the final words recovered from the digital forensics scan.
"Your wedding date, Boss."
May you like
Luca stopped breathing entirely.
"And underneath it," Marcus whispered into the phone, "the exact words written in red ink: DO IT BEFORE HE SAYS I DO."
