Chapter 8 - The Safe House in the Pines

The private twin-engine turboprop cut through the predawn clouds, banking sharply toward the rugged, pine-covered ridges of the Northwoods near the Canadian border.

Inside the cabin, the rhythmic hum of the engines provided a soothing backdrop to the absolute quiet that had settled between Luca and Claire during the two-hour flight from O'Hare.

Claire sat by the oval window, watching the endless blanket of dark green pine trees give way to the gray, mirror-like surface of an isolated mountain lake below.

Her bandaged hand still throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, but the overwhelming terror that had gripped her chest back in the Chicago mansion had finally begun to recede.

She turned her head slightly to look across the narrow aisle.

Luca sat with his eyes closed, his head resting against the leather headrest, his long legs stretched out before him.

Even in repose, his posture retained the coiled, coiled tension of a man who never truly lowered his guard—a man whose entire existence was defined by enemies hiding in the shadows.

Without opening his eyes, Luca spoke, breaking the silence.

"You're wondering what happens to your brother's medical bills now that the Moretti estate is in total lockdown," he said quietly.

Claire started slightly, blinking in surprise. "I... I wasn't specifically thinking about that, but... honestly, yes. I was wondering if I'd have to find a new clinic."

Luca opened one dark, piercing eye and looked straight at her.

"Your brother’s medical bills are paid in full for the next ten years, Claire," Luca stated flatly. "And the trust fund was transferred out of the syndicate’s operational accounts and into a secure, independent personal escrow three hours before we left Chicago."

Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. "Mr. Moretti... I can't accept that. That's too much. I only did what any decent person would do—"

"Stop calling me Mr. Moretti," Luca interrupted, opening both eyes and shifting his body to face her across the aisle. "My name is Luca."

Claire swallowed hard, looking down at her lap. "It feels... strange. You're still the head of the Moretti syndicate."

"As of midnight last night, the Chicago syndicate is undergoing a complete restructuring," Luca corrected, his voice dropping into a serious, reflective register. "Julian Vance is facing federal indictments for corporate espionage and financial fraud that my legal team dropped onto the FBI's desk at midnight. Vanessa is currently sitting in a cheap motel outside Milwaukee with three changes of clothes and zero access to her offshore funds."

He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees.

"And I am sitting on a private plane flying over the wilderness with a brave housemaid who saved my life because she had more integrity than every single high-society executive who ever sat at my dinner table."

Claire felt a sudden, warm flush rise to her cheeks, forcing her to look back out the window at the approaching landing strip carved into the forest floor.

The plane touched down with a smooth, gentle jolt, taxiing down the asphalt runway before coming to a complete stop beside a massive, timber-framed cedar lodge overlooking the lake.

As they stepped off the aircraft ramp into the crisp, pine-scented morning air, Marcus was already waiting by a rugged four-wheel-drive SUV parked near the hangar.

"Everything is secured at the lodge, Boss," Marcus reported, handing Luca a ring of heavy brass keys. "Local contacts have been briefed, and the perimeter is locked down."

Luca nodded, taking the keys before turning his attention back to Claire.

"Welcome to your new office, Claire," Luca said, gesturing toward the sprawling mountain lodge nestled among the towering evergreens. "For the next month, nobody knows where we are, nobody is going to bother you, and your only job is letting that hand heal properly."

Claire stared at the magnificent cedar lodge, then back at Luca, realizing with sudden clarity that her old life as an invisible housemaid was gone forever—and whatever came next was entirely uncharted territory.
