Chapter 12 - The Collapse of the Syndicate Board

The subterranean conference room beneath the Moretti shipping docks was plunged into an atmosphere of suffocating, electric tension.

Around the heavy oak mahogany table sat the seven most powerful capos and regional directors of the Chicago syndicate, their faces grim and shadowed in the recessed lighting.

At the head of the table sat Luca Moretti, his dark suit immaculate, his hands folded neatly over the vintage photographs and the certified birth certificate that Thomas Vance had delivered just hours earlier.

To his right stood Marcus, holding a secure encrypted tablet displaying the frozen financial ledgers of Vanessa Bellini’s offshore accounts.

"You called us down here on an hour's notice, Boss," Dante Moretti, Luca’s senior lieutenant, broke the silence, his voice laced with wary curiosity. "Rumor on the street is your wedding was cancelled last night, and Julian Vance’s penthouse looks like a slaughterhouse."

Luca didn't flinch.

He slowly slid the vintage photographs of a young Vanessa Sterling across the polished wooden surface toward the center of the table.

"Julian Vance is currently sitting in a federal holding facility facing fifty years of federal indictments for corporate espionage and internal treason," Luca announced, his voice echoing quietly off the concrete walls. "And the woman he was conspiring with—Vanessa Bellini—does not exist."

A murmur of absolute shock rippled through the gathered capos as they stared down at the faded images and the 1995 adoption seal.

"What is this nonsense?" Dante muttered, picking up the birth certificate with trembling fingers. "Bellini is old money from the North Shore. Her family holdings financed half our import terminals in 'eighteen."

"Her name is Vanessa Sterling," Luca corrected, his voice dropping into a harsh, glacial register. "Her father was the accountant who embezzled five million dollars from my father's ledger thirty years ago before taking his own life in a holding cell."

The room fell into a dead, absolute silence so profound that the hum of the ventilation system sounded like a roaring jet engine.

"She spent twenty years plotting an inside job," Luca continued, his dark eyes sweeping slowly across the faces of his most trusted men. "She used Julian as her proxy to hollow out our Swiss accounts, and she planned to execute a hostile takeover of the entire syndicate before the ink on our marriage certificate could even dry."

Dante slammed his fist down onto the table, the heavy impact rattling the crystal water pitchers.

"The ungrateful little bitch," Dante snarled, his face twisting with fury. "If we had known she was the spawn of a thief who tried to sink the family, we would have thrown her into Lake Michigan before she ever set foot in this mansion."

"Anger is a wasted emotion, Dante," Luca said evenly, holding up a single hand to restore order. "Revenge is a cold dish, and it is best served when the enemy thinks they have already won."

He stood up from his chair, leaning forward over the table with an intensity that made every capo instinctively straighten their posture.

"Vanessa is currently hosting an emergency charity gala at the Drake Hotel tonight, believing she can rally the city council behind her name to pressure me into a public settlement," Luca declared, a cold, predatory smile touching the corner of his mouth. "She thinks she is holding all the cards."

Luca turned toward the heavy double doors at the back of the bunker.

"Tonight, we are going to crash her party, strip away every illusion she has left, and show Chicago what happens when you mistake a Moretti's patience for weakness."
