Chapter 7 - Ashes of the Dynasty

The broadcast of the intercepted audio recordings reverberated through the grand hallways of the Moretti estate like a localized earthquake.

In the basement staff quarters, the remaining cooks and housekeepers stood frozen in stunned silence, listening to Vanessa Bellini’s cold, calculating voice detail how she planned to poison Luca’s evening scotch and frame the kitchen staff for treason.

Up in the master suite, Vanessa stood paralyzed, her face completely drained of color as her own treasonous words were thrown back at her by the bedroom walls.

"You... you recorded every channel," Vanessa whispered, her knees finally buckling beneath her as she slid down the polished wood of the vanity until she sat on the floor, staring up at Luca with broken, hollow eyes. "You knew from the very beginning."

Luca looked down at her with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing an insect trapped beneath a microscope.

"I knew you were ambitious the day I met you, Vanessa," Luca replied evenly, his hands resting inside his trouser pockets. "Ambition is a useful tool in my world. It drives people to excel, to build, to protect their investments."

He crouched down slightly so his eyes were level with hers.

"But greed without loyalty is a cancer. And a cancer must be excised before it reaches the heart."

Marcus stepped forward into the room, holding a heavy leather briefcase and a single manila envelope.

"The asset seizure is complete, Boss," Marcus reported crisply. "All of Miss Bellini’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Zurich have been frozen and transferred back into the Moretti Foundation reserves. Her designer apartments in downtown Chicago and Miami have been reclaimed by our holding company."

Vanessa let out a strangled, pathetic gasp, clutching the silk fabric of her dressing gown as the full financial devastation washed over her.

"You can't do that," she sobbed, her aristocratic composure completely shattered. "That's my personal money! That’s my life's work!"

"It was my money, Vanessa," Luca corrected softly, standing back up to his full height. "You merely borrowed it while you were acting as my fiancée. Now, the lease has expired."

He gestured to Marcus with a subtle nod of his head.

"Pack her bags," Luca ordered. "Not the designer luggage, not the diamond necklaces I bought her, and certainly not the red silk gown from the engagement dinner. Give her a standard canvas duffel bag, fill it with three changes of basic streetwear, and escort her off the property before the clock hits one."

"No! Luca, please!" Vanessa shrieked, scrambling forward across the marble floor to grab the hem of his trousers. "Don't do this! We can fix this! I love you—"

Luca stepped backward smoothly, slipping out of her desperate grasp as if she were nothing more than a speck of dust on his shoe.

"The wedding is officially cancelled, Vanessa," Luca said, turning his back on her as he walked toward the double doors. "And unlike you... I never repeat my mistakes."

He walked out into the hallway, leaving her screaming curses and weeping hysterically against the cold marble floor as Marcus and the guards moved in to execute the final eviction.

Downstairs in the grand foyer, Claire Dawson stood quietly near the base of the winding staircase, wearing her simple wool coat, holding her bandaged left hand against her stomach.

She had listened to the entire broadcast from the lower landing.

She had heard the downfall of the woman who had tried to destroy her life less than twenty-four hours ago.

As Luca descended the marble steps, his heavy boots echoing softly in the vast, empty hall, he stopped a few feet away from her.

The harsh, merciless mob boss expression had vanished, replaced by a quiet, exhausted stillness.

"Are you ready to leave this place, Claire?" Luca asked, his voice softer than she had ever heard it before.

Claire looked up into his dark, tired eyes, feeling the terrifying weight of the past two days lift off her shoulders.

"Where are we going, Mr. Moretti?" she asked quietly.

May you like

Luca offered her a faint, genuine smile—the first true smile he had shown anyone in years.

"Away from Chicago, Claire," Luca said, extending his hand toward her uninjured palm. "Let's go find out what happens when the snow finally melts."
