Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass of Oak Street

The midnight rain hammered against the bulletproof windows of Luca Moretti’s custom-armored Maybach as it sliced through the slick, neon-lit streets of downtown Chicago.
In the back seat, Claire sat wrapped in a heavy cashmere overcoat that Luca had tossed over her shoulders before shoving her into the vehicle.
Her bandaged left hand throbbed in rhythm with the windshield wipers, a constant physical reminder of the world she had accidentally stumbled into.
In the front passenger seat, Marcus sat silently with a secure tactical laptop open on his knees, the screen casting an eerie blue glow across his rugged, scarred face.
"We have eyes on the Oak Street penthouse, Boss," Marcus reported without turning around. "Julian Vance’s security detail just pulled away from the subterranean garage. He’s heading south toward the warehouse district."
Luca sat in the middle of the spacious leather-upholstered back seat, his arms crossed over his chest, his gaze fixed straight ahead through the rain-streaked glass.
He hadn't spoken a single word since they left the gates of the estate twenty minutes ago.
The aura of cold, calculated wrath radiating from his massive frame made the air inside the luxury cabin feel as dense and heavy as lead.
"And Vanessa?" Luca asked, his voice chillingly calm.
"Still locked inside her third-floor suite at your mansion," Marcus answered, tapping a few keys on the tactical terminal. "She thinks you're still downstairs reviewing wine inventories. She hasn't tried to use her satellite phone yet; she’s waiting for Julian to confirm the transfer of the Swiss bank routing keys."
Luca let out a harsh, bitter breath through his nose.
"She thinks she’s won," Luca muttered, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of obsidian. "She spent six months planning this coup, believing she could outsmart the very syndicate that put her family back on their feet after the bankruptcy of 'nineteen."
He turned his head slowly, casting a sideways glance toward Claire, who was shrinking back against the leather upholstery as far away from him as possible.
"You're shaking, Claire," Luca noted, his tone softening by a microscopic fraction.
"I'm... I'm just cold, Mr. Moretti," Claire lied, pulling the heavy cashmere coat tighter around her shivering frame.
"You're terrified," Luca corrected bluntly. "And you have every right to be. You walked into a slaughterhouse yesterday afternoon, and you walked out carrying the butcher's ledger."
Claire swallowed hard, staring down at her bandaged hand. "What are you going to do to her?"
Luca turned his gaze back out the window toward the towering skyscrapers piercing the stormy Chicago skyline.
"I'm not going to touch her," Luca said quietly.
Claire blinked in sheer astonishment. "You're... you're not going to kill her?"
"Killing is easy, Claire," Luca explained, his voice devoid of any human emotion. "A bullet to the head takes half a second. It ends the pain before the brain can even process the betrayal."
He turned his dark, fathomless eyes back toward her.
"True justice in my world requires total, absolute eradication. I am going to strip Vanessa of every diamond, every trust fund, every designer gown, and every single shred of social standing she possesses. I am going to return her to the gutter she crawled out of, naked and penniless, with the entire Chicago underworld laughing at her name."
The sheer, icy cruelty of his vision sent a cold shiver racing down Claire’s spine.
She realized then why men feared the name Moretti.
He wasn't just a mob boss; he was an executioner of destinies.
The Maybach slowed smoothly, turning off Lake Shore Drive and pulling into the private underground loading dock of an ultra-exclusive high-rise residential tower on Oak Street—Julian Vance’s luxury penthouse fortress.
"We're in position, Boss," Marcus announced, cutting the engine and locking the vehicle’s communication grid into local police and private security frequencies.
Luca reached inside his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol, checking the magazine with a practiced, fluid click before sliding it back into his shoulder holster.
He reached for the door handle, then paused and looked back at Claire.
"Stay in the vehicle, lock the doors, and do not roll down the glass for anyone," Luca ordered, his tone absolute. "If I'm not back down here in thirty minutes, Marcus has orders to drive you straight to a safe house across the state line."
Before Claire could utter a single word of protest, Luca pushed the door open and stepped out into the pouring rain, vanishing into the shadows of the concrete parking structure with the silent, deadly grace of a panther.
Inside the Maybach, Claire pressed her forehead against the cool glass, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs as she watched the digital dash clock tick forward.
Ten minutes passed.
Then fifteen.
Upstairs on the penthouse floor of the tower, Julian Vance sat in his leather executive chair, swirling a glass of twenty-five-year-old single-malt scotch while staring out at the stormy skyline.
The penthouse was bathed in the soft, amber glow of recessed designer lighting, creating an atmosphere of quiet, arrogant wealth.
Julian was thirty-six, handsome in a slick, predatory way, with tailored Italian suits and a smile that had charmed half the debutantes on the Gold Coast.
As Luca Moretti’s designated best man, he had spent the last three years standing at the mob boss's right hand, nodding at every command, drinking his whiskey, and secretly plotting to hollow out the Moretti empire from the inside out.
A soft ding echoed from the private elevator foyer near the double mahogany entrance doors.
Julian didn't even turn around, assuming it was his personal assistant returning with the final encrypted bank transfer confirmations from the Cayman Islands shell accounts.
"Leave the files on the foyer table and get out," Julian commanded smoothly, taking another sip of his scotch. "We execute the final wire transfer at midnight. Once the money hits Zurich, Moretti won't even have enough cash left to pay his own hitmen."
Footsteps approached from behind him—heavy, deliberate, and entirely too slow to belong to an assistant.
Julian frowned, setting his glass down on the glass-topped desk with a sharp clink.
"I said leave the files—"
Julian started to turn his chair around, but before his body could complete the rotation, a massive hand slammed down onto his shoulder with the force of a hydraulic press, forcing him back into the leather seat with bone-crushing weight.
Julian gasped, his eyes flying wide open in sudden terror as he looked up into the dark, unblinking eyes of Luca Moretti standing directly behind him.
"L-Luca..." Julian stammered, the color draining completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in a tailored suit. "What... what are you doing here? I thought you were at the estate reviewing the wedding guest lists..."
Luca didn't speak.
He slowly reached down, his fingers gripping the lapel of Julian’s expensive designer jacket, and hauled him upright out of the chair as if he weighed nothing at all.
With a violent shove, Luca sent Julian crashing backward across the room, smashing him straight through a massive, floor-to-ceiling glass display case filled with rare antique jade sculptures.
The glass shattered into a million glittering shards, raining down over Julian’s body like a frozen waterfall of diamond dust.
Julian shrieked in agony as several jagged shards pierced through his clothes, slicing open his forearms and cheeks, drawing bright crimson blood onto the pristine white Persian rug.
"You're missing your wedding rehearsal, Julian," Luca said softly, his voice cutting through the penthouse like a razor blade.
Luca walked slowly across the shattered glass, his leather boots crunching rhythmically against the glittering debris until he stood towering over the bleeding, gasping best man.
Julian clutched his bleeding arm, looking up at Luca with eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated panic.
"I... I can explain," Julian choked out, spitting blood onto the rug. "It was Vanessa... she seduced me... she promised me half the syndicate holdings if we got you out of the way—"
Luca didn't let him finish.
He bent down, grabbed Julian by the collar of his ruined shirt, and hauled him up to his knees with one hand while drawing his Sig Sauer pistol with the other, pressing the cold steel barrel firmly against the center of Julian’s forehead.
"I don't care about the seduction, Julian," Luca whispered, his voice dangerously low. "I care about the date you wrote on the back of my bank transfer files."
Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the desk where his encrypted laptop sat glowing in the dark.
"What... what date?" Julian gasped.
May you like
Luca pressed the barrel harder against his skin, forcing Julian to look straight into his dark, merciless eyes.
"Your execution date," Luca replied. "And unlike my wedding... I'm not going to cancel it."
