Chapter 14 - Mask of Glass and Blood

The ballroom erupted into a deafening roar of overlapping whispers, camera shutters, and frantic gasps as the explosive revelation ricocheted through the crowd of Chicago's elite.

Vanessa staggered backward until the edge of the elevated dais pressed hard against her spine, her carefully constructed facade of aristocratic innocence completely disintegrating into shards of sheer, unadulterated panic.

"It's a lie!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as she pointed a shaking finger toward Luca. "He's lying! He's a paranoid mob boss trying to ruin me because I walked away from his abusive syndicate!"

Nobody in the room believed her.

The high-society patrons who had been kissing her ring just five minutes earlier were now desperately backing away, terrified of being tainted by association with a disgraced criminal's orphan engaged in a failed corporate vendetta.

Luca didn't raise his voice, nor did he display a single trace of anger; he simply watched her destroy herself with the cold, detached patience of an executioner.

"The financial wire transfers, the duplicate desk keys, the stolen Swiss bank routing codes, and Julian Vance’s signed confession are currently being broadcast to every major federal agency and news outlet in the state," Luca stated calmly, stepping closer to her. "Your thirty-year war ended the moment you laid hands on an innocent housemaid in my linen closet."

Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer horror as she realized that Luca knew every single intricate detail of her crime—even down to the physical assault on Claire.

"You... you ruined me," Vanessa whispered, tears of pure rage streaming down her powdered cheeks, ruining her makeup. "You took everything from me!"

"I took back what was always mine, Vanessa," Luca replied softly, stopping just a few feet away from her trembling frame. "And unlike your father, I'm not going to let you escape accountability in a holding cell."

He raised his hand and signaled silently to Marcus and Dante.

Two security guards stepped forward, gently but firmly taking Vanessa by her bare arms, lifting her away from the dais as she began to scream and flail wildly against their grip.

"Let me go! You can't do this to me! I'll destroy you all!" Vanessa shrieked, her manicured nails clawing uselessly at the air as she was dragged backward toward the service exit, leaving the glittering ballroom in a state of stunned, paralyzed silence.

Luca watched her departure without a single expression of triumph, his face remaining as unreadable as granite.

He turned slowly around, his dark eyes scanning the terrified crowd of judges, politicians, and socialites who were desperately trying to make themselves invisible.

"The party is over, ladies and gentlemen," Luca announced quietly, adjusting his cuffs. "Enjoy your evening."

With that, he turned on his heel and walked back down the center aisle, gesturing for Claire to follow him out of the suffocating ballroom into the cool, refreshing night air of Michigan Avenue.
