Chapter 6 - The Clock Strikes Twelve

The rain beat a relentless, rhythmic tattoo against the reinforced stained-glass windows of the Moretti estate master suite.

Inside, the digital clock on the bedside table flipped silently from 11:59 P.M. to midnight.

Vanessa Bellini stood by the panoramic French doors, her silk dressing gown rustling softly as she checked her mobile phone for the tenth time in as many minutes.

No signal from Julian.

No confirmation wire from the Zurich shell accounts.

A cold knot of unease tightened deep in her stomach, contradicting the artificial warmth of the heated marble floors beneath her bare feet.

She had spent years clawing her way up from the lower echelons of Chicago’s socialite underground, trading favors, secrets, and bodies to secure her place beside Luca Moretti.

She had convinced herself that Luca was just another ruthless animal who could be managed, outsmarted, and eventually disposed of once the family assets were legally transferred into her control.

Yet, as the grandfather clock in the downstairs foyer began its deep, resonant tolling of midnight, a strange, suffocating dread settled over her chest.

One.

Two.

Three.

The deep, bronze chimes vibrated through the floorboards, echoing upward like funeral bells.

Before the twelfth chime could fade into the heavy silence of the room, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the hallway outside.

Vanessa spun around, her breath catching in her throat.

The heavy brass handle of her double doors turned slowly, deliberately, from the outside.

"Luca?" Vanessa called out, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound composed. "Darling, why is security patrolling the east wing at this hour?"

The doors swung open wide, revealing not Luca, but Marcus and four heavily armed guards in tactical gear, their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas.

Before Vanessa could scream, Marcus stepped aside, and Luca Moretti walked into the room.

He looked immaculate, his dark suit completely dry, his face carved from stone, carrying an aura of absolute, crushing authority.

"Luca!" Vanessa gasped, pressing her hands flat against her chest as she tried to force a breathless, seductive smile onto her face. "You startled me. What is the meaning of this? Why are these men in my—"

"Stop talking, Vanessa," Luca interrupted, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

He raised his right hand and tossed a small black object onto the king-sized velvet bed.

It was her personal satellite phone.

Vanessa’s eyes widened in sudden, stark terror as she stared at the device.

"Where... where did you get that?" she whispered, her carefully constructed facade crumbling into dust.

"From Julian Vance's penthouse," Luca replied, stepping closer until he stood just inches away from her. "Along with his shattered jaw, his drained bank accounts, and the physical confession he signed on the back of my syndicate transfer deeds thirty minutes ago."

Vanessa staggered backward until the edge of the mahogany vanity pressed hard against her lower back, trapping her completely.

"He... he lied to you," Vanessa stammered, her voice pitching upward in rising panic. "Julian is a desperate man, he would say anything to save his own skin, Luca, you have to believe me—"

Luca didn't raise his voice.

He simply reached out, his fingers gripping her chin with enough force to lock her head in place, forcing her to look straight into his black, unblinking eyes.

"The micro-SD card you dropped in the linen room yesterday afternoon didn't lie, Vanessa," Luca whispered. "The photographs of you opening my private desk didn't lie. And the date written in red ink on the back of my transfer papers... well, that was the most truthful thing you've ever written."

He released her chin with a sharp shove, making her stumble against the vanity table.

"Turn on the estate master intercom, Marcus," Luca commanded without taking his eyes off his former fiancée.

"Done, Boss," Marcus replied, holding a tactical radio console near the wall speaker.

Luca leaned in close to Vanessa’s ear, his voice carrying the finality of a guillotine blade dropping in the town square.

"Happy midnight, my love," Luca said softly. "Let's listen to your wedding playlist together."

With a flick of a switch, the private audio recordings of Vanessa and Julian plotting the assassination of the Moretti family echoed crystal-clear through every single speaker across the entire mansion, shattering the silence of the night forever.
