Chapter 5 - The Silence Before the Storm

Back down in the subterranean parking garage, the heavy armored doors of the Maybach muffled the distant, muffled sounds of breaking glass and screaming coming from the penthouse elevator shaft high above.

Claire sat gripping the edges of the leather seat, her chest heaving as adrenaline flooded her bloodstream.

Every second that ticked by felt like an eternity.

What was happening up there?

Had Luca already killed him?

Had Julian’s private security detail ambushed them?

Her mind raced through a dozen catastrophic scenarios, each one ending with her body being dumped into the Chicago River alongside the traitors.

Suddenly, the rear door of the Maybach jerked open.

Claire screamed softly, throwing her hands up to shield her face before she realized who was standing in the doorway.

It was Luca.

His white dress shirt was spattered with a few dark, ominous drops of blood, and his knuckles were bruised and raw, but his breathing was slow, steady, and entirely controlled.

He climbed into the back seat, pulled the heavy armored door shut with a solid thud, and pressed a button on the console to lock all doors.

"Marcus," Luca called out over the intercom. "Move the car. We're heading to the North Side docks."

"Understood, Boss," Marcus replied from the front seat.

The Maybach glided out of the parking structure, merging seamlessly into the wet, rain-swept lanes of Lake Shore Drive.

Claire sat pressed against the far door, staring at Luca with a mixture of terror and morbid fascination.

"Is... is he dead?" Claire whispered, the words escaping her lips before she could stop them.

Luca turned his head slowly, looking at her over the dim interior console lighting.

"No," Luca replied calmly, pulling out a clean white handkerchief to wipe a speck of blood off his knuckles. "Death is too merciful for Julian Vance. I left him tied to his ruined glass desk with his own designer tie, bleeding from fifty different cuts, with his frozen laptop screen flashing his offshore bank accounts being systematically drained down to zero by my financial division."

Claire swallowed hard, her throat tight. "He’s ruined."

"Completely," Luca confirmed without a trace of emotion. "By morning, he won't have a penny to his name, his passport will be flagged by every federal and international agency on the globe, and every capo in the syndicate will know he’s a thief and a coward."

Luca turned his body slightly toward her, his dark eyes softening just enough to make her breath catch.

"And Vanessa?" Claire asked, her voice barely audible.

"Vanessa is currently pacing the floor of my master bedroom, wondering why Julian hasn't answered her encrypted text messages," Luca said, a cold, predatory smile touching the corner of his mouth. "She’s waiting for midnight. She’s waiting for the wire transfer to clear so she can pack her diamond necklaces and catch a private jet to Zurich."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the micro-SD card Claire had given him earlier in the basement staff quarters.

"Instead," Luca continued softly, "at midnight, my security team is going to kick down her bedroom door, seize her phone, and play every single intercepted text message and audio recording between her and Julian over the estate's master intercom system."

Claire stared at him in sheer disbelief. "You're going to broadcast it across the entire mansion?"

"I'm going to make sure every servant, every guard, and every relative she invited to this pathetic wedding hears the exact words she used to sell me out," Luca stated, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding finality.

He reached across the space between them, his large, warm hand gently taking hold of her uninjured right hand.

Claire flinched instinctively, but he didn't squeeze or hurt her; he simply held her fingers with a strange, grounded gentleness that contrasted sharply with the violence of his actions just minutes ago.

"You saved my life today, Claire," Luca said, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense register that vibrated straight through her chest. "You walked into a trap, you took a beating, and you protected my family's legacy when my own flesh and blood—my best man and my fiancée—were driving a knife into my spine."

"I didn't do it for you, Mr. Moretti," Claire whispered honestly, her eyes locked onto his. "I did it because... because I couldn't stand watching someone destroy an innocent person who never did anything to deserve it."

Luca let out a slow, heavy breath, his thumb tracing a light circle over the back of her hand.

"Innocent?" Luca murmured, shaking his head. "Nobody in my world is innocent, Claire. Least of all me."

He paused, his dark eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her skin tingle.

"But you... you're something entirely different."

The Maybach slowed to a smooth halt as it passed through the heavy iron security gates of the North Side industrial docks, pulling up beside a massive, floodlit shipping warehouse overlooking the dark, churning waters of Lake Michigan.

Through the rain-streaked windows, Claire saw a private helicopter waiting on the concrete tarmac, its rotor blades spinning slowly, kicking up a fierce gale of wind and water.

Luca didn't let go of her hand.

"Where are we going?" Claire asked, her heart pounding against her ribs as she realized the sheer magnitude of what was about to unfold.

May you like

Luca turned his head toward the helicopter, his jaw set in a hard, unbreakable line of resolve.

"We're going home, Claire," Luca said quietly. "And then... we're going to watch the empire burn down to the studs so we can build something real from the ashes."
