Chapter 10 - The Doctor’s Trap and the Ultimatum in the Dark

Arthur Vance looked entirely unbothered by the destroyed door or the armed father standing before him.

He wore his pristine white coat over a black cashmere sweater, a smug, untouchable smile playing across his lips as he blocked their only exit out of the quarantine ward.

"I must admit, Mrs. Evans, I underestimated your resourcefulness," Arthur said, his voice smooth and conversational as he strolled into the room.

"Tracking me all the way to Blackwood Sanitarium? Impressive. Truly."

Mark took a protective step forward, his hand tightening around the rifle barrel.

"Get out of our way, Arthur, or I swear to god I will put a bullet through your chest right here and now," Mark snarled, his voice vibrating with a lethal, terrifying promise.

Arthur didn't flinch. Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy-duty metallic cylinder with a blinking red LED light.

"You could try, Mark," Arthur replied calmly, holding up the remote detonation device.

"But you should know that this building is wired with industrial-grade thermite charges along the primary structural foundations. One push of this button, and this entire sanitarium collapses into a fiery tomb in under sixty seconds."

Clara clutched Lily tighter against her chest, stepping up beside Mark, her eyes burning with pure venom.

"You're insane, Arthur," Clara hissed. "You're going to blow yourself up just to cover your tracks?"

"Not at all, my dear," Arthur smiled, his eyes gleaming with sick satisfaction.

"I have a helicopter waiting on the roof. I am simply offering you a choice. You give me the digital backup drive containing your financial records—the one you copied from my office—and I let you walk out of here with your breathing daughter."

Mark looked down at Clara, their eyes locking in a silent, loaded communication born of ten years of marriage.

Clara slowly reached into her coat pocket, her fingers brushing against the micro-drive they had retrieved from Harper's belongings at the precinct.

"And if we refuse?" Clara asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy cadence.

Arthur’s smile vanished, his expression turning as cold and dead as winter stone.
