Chapter 7 - The Precinct Ultimatum and the Sister’s Shattered Illusion

The fluorescent lights of the Metro Police Precinct interrogation room buzzed with an irritating, relentless hum.

Harper sat at the scarred wooden table, her designer trench coat soaked and wrinkled, her face pale and drawn as she stared at the handcuffs binding her wrists to the metal loop on the table surface.

The heavy metal door swung open with a sharp click.

Clara and Mark strode into the room, their clothes damp, their faces carved from absolute granite.

Harper flinched, shrinking back in her chair, expecting screaming, weeping, or violence.

Instead, Clara pulled out the metal chair opposite her sister, sat down with agonizing slowness, and placed the digital recorder squarely in the center of the table.

"Clara... Mark... please," Harper whimpered, her voice cracking immediately.

"I swear I didn't know Arthur was going to pull a stunt like that! He told me it was just a quiet repossession! He said you guys had insurance!"

"Shut up, Harper," Clara said quietly. Her voice didn't rise in volume, but it carried a weight so heavy it practically pinned Harper to her chair.

"You sold us out for gambling debts. You traded our home, our savings, and our safety to a man who uses people like disposable trash."

"Arthur loves me!" Harper cried out hysterically, tears streaming down her smudged mascara.

"He promised we were going away together! He promised he’d take care of my debts!"

Mark let out a harsh, bitter laugh, leaning over the table until his face was inches from Harper’s.

"He doesn't even know your last name, you pathetic idiot," Mark growled.

"An hour ago, while you were sitting in this holding cell crying for your boyfriend, Arthur walked into Lily’s ICU room, sedated the night nurse, and kidnapped our dying daughter."

Harper’s jaw dropped, her breath catching in her throat as the color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking like a corpse.

"No..." Harper whispered, shaking her head frantically.

"No, that's a lie! Arthur wouldn't hurt a child! He's a pediatrician!"

"He’s a monster who treats children like financial collateral," Clara interrupted, pressing play on the digital recorder.

The crisp, undeniable audio of Arthur Vance's voice filled the small interrogation room—his chilling confession about the heavy metal toxicity, the engineered medical debt, and his complete lack of remorse echoing off the metal walls.

Harper stared at the recorder, her lower lip trembling violently as the illusion of her grand romance shattered into a million jagged pieces.

"He used me," Harper whispered, the horror finally setting in.

"He used me to get to your house, and now he's going to kill her."

"Not if you help us find him," Clara said, leaning forward, her eyes locked onto her sister’s terrified face.

"Where is his private off-grid facility, Harper? He has a secondary lab where he keeps his experimental research records. Give us the address, and maybe—just maybe—we won't let the prosecutors throw away the key on you right alongside him."
