Chapter 11 - The Rooftop Exchange and the Final Gambit

The sterile air of the quarantine ward grew suffocating, the blinking red LED on Arthur’s remote detonator casting a rhythmic, bloody pulse across the peeling walls.
Mark shielded Lily’s sleeping form with his broad shoulders, his hunting rifle held ready, while Clara stood firm beside him, her hand sliding slowly into her coat pocket.
"You're a coward, Arthur," Clara said, her voice cutting through the hum of the medical equipment with razor-sharp precision.
"You hide behind fake foundations, poisoned prescriptions, and remote detonators because you don't have the courage to face what you actually are—a thief."
Arthur’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing his polished features.
"Call me whatever makes you feel righteous, Clara," Arthur retorted smoothly, extending his free hand toward her.
"The drive. Now. Or the countdown begins."
Clara pulled her hand out of her pocket, holding up a small, black USB micro-drive between her thumb and forefinger.
"It's right here," Clara said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward.
"Come and get it."
Arthur narrowed his eyes suspiciously, keeping the detonator raised in his left hand as he stepped forward to meet her halfway across the room.
"Don't play games with me, Mrs. Evans," Arthur warned, his fingers twitching near the edge of the micro-drive.
"Hand it over, and I'll toss the master garage keys to your husband so you can take your little girl to a real hospital."
Clara stopped just two feet away from him, locking her dark, vengeful eyes directly into his.
"You'll never spend a single cent of our money, Arthur," she whispered.
Before he could register the warning, Clara didn't hand him the drive—she lunged forward, slamming her knee upward with brutal, explosive force directly into his groin.
Arthur let out a high-pitched, choked gasp, his eyes bulging as the breath left his lungs in a violent rush.
The remote detonator slipped from his paralyzed fingers, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.
Mark didn't hesitate for a microsecond.
Dropping the rifle, Mark lunged across the room like a freight train, driving his shoulder squarely into Arthur's chest and sending the doctor crashing backward into a rusted metal IV pole.
The pole snapped under the impact, and Arthur collapsed in a heap, gasping for air as blood trickled from a split lip.
"Clara, grab Lily!" Mark shouted, pinning Arthur to the floor with a heavy boot pressed firmly against his windpipe.

"We're getting out of here right now!"
Clara scooped Lily up into her arms, securing her unconscious daughter against her chest, and bolted for the shattered doorway, leaving Arthur choking on the cold concrete as the sirens of approaching state police cruisers finally began to wail in the distance.
