Chapter 2 - The Emergency Ward and the Sister’s Mask

The fluorescent lights of St. Jude’s emergency ward hummed with a sterile, relentless intensity, casting a blinding white glare over the crowded, chaotic waiting room.

Clara paced frantically in front of the sliding glass doors, her wet clothes clinging coldly to her skin, her hands stained with a smear of mud and medicine from the frantic car ride.

Beside her, Mark stood with his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were completely bloodless, staring through the glass partitions into Trauma Bay Three, where a team of three nurses and a pediatrician were desperately working over Lily's tiny body.

The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was too fast, too erratic—a frantic SOS in a room filled with quiet despair.

"Mr. and Mrs. Evans?" a calm, exhausted-looking doctor said, pushing open the heavy swinging doors and stepping out into the hallway, pulling off his blue latex gloves.

Mark and Clara rushed forward simultaneously, their faces pale with dread.

"Is she going to be okay, Dr. Vance?" Clara asked, her voice trembling violently as she grabbed the doctor's white coat sleeve.

Dr. Vance let out a heavy sigh, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses.

"Your daughter is suffering from severe bacterial pneumonia complicated by a severe strain of influenza," the doctor explained gravely.

"Her temperature spiked to one hundred and four point five. If you had arrived even twenty minutes later, her organs would have begun shutting down from septic shock."

Clara let out a muffled sob, burying her face in her hands as Mark pulled her tightly against his chest, his own eyes burning with unshed tears.

"Can we see her?" Mark asked, his voice cracking.

"She’s stable for the moment, but she's heavily sedated on an IV drip," Dr. Vance nodded gently.

"You can sit with her one at a time. But I need to ask you both something. One of the intake nurses noticed severe stress markers and elevated heart rates that didn't align with the illness alone. Has there been some kind of traumatic event at your home tonight?"

Mark and Clara exchanged a dark, loaded look.

Before Mark could formulate an evasive answer, the sharp click of high heels echoing down the linoleum corridor drew their attention.

Turning around, Clara saw Harper walking briskly toward them, dressed in an expensive designer trench coat, her blond hair perfectly styled, holding a Starbucks coffee cup in her manicured hand as if she were strolling through a shopping mall.

"Oh, thank god!" Harper gasped, plastering an expression of profound, theatrical concern across her face as she rushed forward with her arms outstretched.

"I got your frantic text, Clara! How is my sweet little Lily?!"

Clara pulled away from Mark so fast she stumbled slightly, her eyes locking onto her sister’s face with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred.

The woman standing in front of her wasn't a worried aunt; she was a predator wearing a sister's face.

"Don't you dare touch me," Clara whispered, her voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying hum that stopped Harper dead in her tracks.

Harper’s arms froze mid-air, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing her features before she smoothly rearranged her expression back into innocent distress.

"Clara? What's wrong with you? I'm worried about my niece!" Harper whimpered, casting a pathetic glance toward Mark.

"Mark, tell her she's not thinking straight. The fever must be driving her crazy."

Mark didn't say a word. He stepped forward slowly, towering over Harper, his shadow swallowing her whole under the fluorescent lights.

"The police are at our house right now, Harper," Mark said softly, his voice dangerously low.

"And the man you hired to rob us? The one with the scar on his chin? He’s currently bleeding in the back of a squad car, telling the detectives everything about the master code you texted him."

Harper’s coffee cup slipped from her fingers, shattering against the linoleum floor, dark liquid splashing across her designer boots as the color drained entirely from her face.
