Chapter 9 - The Quarantine Ward and the Race Against Time

The subterranean hallway of Sector Four was lit by intermittent, flickering fluorescent tubes that buzzed with an irritating, high-pitched whine.

Clara and Mark moved swiftly down the corridor, their boots making no sound against the damp linoleum floor, passing rows of reinforced steel doors with small glass observation windows.

Inside each room, remnants of old medical equipment—rusted IV poles, broken monitors, and empty specimen jars—cast long, grotesque shadows against the peeling mint-green walls.

"Listen," Mark whispered suddenly, holding up his hand to halt Clara in her tracks.

From somewhere further down the hallway, muffled by the thick steel doors, came a faint, rhythmic electronic beep.

The unmistakable sound of a pediatric heart monitor.

Clara’s heart skipped a beat. She broke into a fast, silent jog, following the sound until she reached a heavy door marked Isolation Ward B - Authorized Personnel Only.

She lunged forward, grabbing the brass handle and twisting it with all her might.

Locked.

"Stand back," Mark ordered, stepping in front of her.

Raising his boot, Mark delivered a brutal, powerful kick directly beside the electronic lock.

The wooden frame splintered instantly, the heavy metal latch tearing out of the wall with a deafening crash, swinging the door wide open.

They rushed into the room.

In the center of the sterile, brightly lit quarantine ward sat a small pediatric hospital bed, surrounded by IV bags and automated respiratory pumps.

And there, lying beneath a thin white blanket, was Lily.

"Lily!" Clara shrieked, dropping to her knees beside the bed, throwing her arms around her daughter's frail, unresponsive form.

Lily’s skin was still dangerously hot to the touch, her breathing shallow and raspy, but her chest rose and fell as the heart monitor above her chimed its steady, vital rhythm.

"She's alive," Mark breathed in profound relief, sweeping his daughter up into his arms, blankets and all.

"We need to get her out of here right now."

Before they could reach the shattered doorway, the loud, mocking sound of slow handclaps echoed from the hallway outside.

Mark and Clara spun around, shielding Lily between them.

Leaning against the doorframe, casually twirling a set of master keys around his index finger, stood Dr. Arthur Vance.
