Chapter 12 - The Sirens of Justice and the Fall of the Doctor

The flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen state trooper cruisers cut through the dark, torrential rain outside the Blackwood Sanitarium, casting frantic, colorful beams across the crumbling concrete facade.
Mark carried Lily out through the shattered service entrance, shielding her feverish face from the downpour with his jacket, straight toward the paramedics standing beside an idling ambulance.
"She's in septic shock! Her temperature is spiking again!" Mark yelled over the howling wind, handing his daughter up to the waiting medical staff.
Clara rushed up right beside the gurney, gripping Lily’s small, burning hand as the paramedics loaded her into the back of the ambulance and slammed the rear doors shut.
As the ambulance tore down the access road toward St. Jude’s hospital with its sirens screaming, Clara turned back toward the sanitarium entrance.
Two state troopers emerged from the darkness, dragging a handcuffed Arthur Vance between them.
The pediatrician’s white coat was stained with mud and blood, his designer suit ruined, his arrogant posture completely broken as the rain plastered his hair against his forehead.
As they walked past Clara, Arthur lifted his head, his eyes locking onto hers with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.
"You think the police can hold me, Clara?" Arthur rasped, his voice trembling with exhausted fury.
"My offshore accounts are untraceable. My legal team will have me out on bail before the sun comes up."
Clara stepped right up to him, stopping the state troopers with a single, commanding look.
She reached into her coat pocket, pulled out her phone, and tapped the screen to play a loud, clear audio file.
It wasn't just the confession from his office.
It was the complete, unredacted recording of his conversation with Harper, his offshore wire transfer confirmations, and his explicit admission to tampering with Lily’s pharmacy logs—automatically transmitted to the Metro Police cyber-crime division three minutes before they breached the sanitarium.
Arthur’s face turned the color of ash.
"The federal wire fraud division was copied on that transmission, Arthur," Clara said, her voice dropping into a cold, absolute finality.

"You're not going to a holding cell. You're going straight to a federal penitentiary where men like you spend the rest of their lives reading about the properties they used to own."
The troopers shoved a speechless, defeated Arthur into the back of a cruiser, slamming the door shut as the vehicle sped off into the stormy night.
