Chapter 6 - The Empty Bed and the Descent into the Underground

The hospital room was horrifyingly still.
The white pediatric bed sat empty, the crisp cotton sheets pushed back in a hasty scramble, an IV drip swinging gently from its metal pole like a pendulum ticking away the remaining seconds of their daughter's life.
Clara stood at the foot of the bed, her fingers lightly grazing the edge of the abandoned unicorn birthday card that a nurse had carefully placed on the nightstand.
Mark stood behind her, his chest heaving with silent, volcanic fury, his fists clenched so tight his fingernails drew blood against his palms.
"He took her," Clara whispered, her voice entirely hollow, stripped of all tears, leaving behind a cold, terrifying emptiness.
"He took our sick little girl out of a hospital bed just to leverage a piece of dirt."
Mark turned on his heel, his heavy boots echoing off the linoleum floor as he stormed out of the ICU ward toward the elevators, ready to rip Arthur Vance apart with his bare hands.
"Mark, wait!" Clara called out sharply, running after him down the corridor.
"Killing him won't bring Lily back! Arthur has a network, he has fixers, and he has a heavily armed extraction team moving through this city right now. If we go after him blind, we play right into his hands."
Mark stopped just short of the elevator doors, his broad shoulders shaking as he slammed his fist against the drywall, cracking the plaster with a dull thud.
"Then what do we do, Clara?!" Mark roared, turning back to face her, his eyes bloodshot and wild.
"Our daughter is dying of pneumonia in the hands of a sociopathic doctor who uses children as leverage! Every minute we waste talking is another minute her fever climbs!"
Clara reached out, grabbing Mark by the lapels of his jacket, pulling him down to her eye level until he had no choice but to look into her burning, razor-sharp gaze.
"We use Harper," Clara said, her voice dropping into a lethal, resolute whisper.
"Harper is still sitting in the precinct holding cell. She thinks Arthur loves her, she thinks they were going to split our assets and run off to the Cayman Islands together."
Mark’s eyes widened slightly as the tactical brilliance of Clara’s plan took root in his mind.
"You want to play them against each other," Mark realized.
"Harper doesn't know Arthur kidnapped Lily," Clara nodded coldly, pulling the digital recorder from her pocket.

"She thinks this was just a simple white-collar real estate fraud. The moment she finds out the man she protected just abducted her dying niece, her loyalty will turn to ash."
Without another word, they turned away from the empty hospital room and bolted toward the exit doors, plunging back out into the freezing midnight rain to execute the first strike of their war.
