Chapter 5 - The Scalpel and the Ransom Note

The air inside the private office grew thick and suffocating, the hum of the desk lamp sounding like a buzzing hornet in the tense silence.

Mark’s grip on Arthur’s white coat tightened until his knuckles turned entirely white, a low, animalistic growl rumbling deep in his chest.

"You poisoned our daughter," Mark whispered, his voice trembling with a rage so absolute it bordered on terrifying.

"You poisoned Lily just to turn our home into a revolving door of medical debt so you could legally seize our property through your shell corporations!"

Arthur didn't flinch.

Despite being pinned across his own desk, the pediatrician’s eyes remained icy, calculating, and devoid of a single ounce of human remorse.

"Property values in this district are skyrocketing, Mark," Arthur replied coolly, his voice dripping with elitist arrogance.

"You and your wife were squatting on land worth millions while drowning in contractor debt. I simply offered Harper a way out of her poker debts by accelerating a process that was already inevitable."

Clara reached into her coat pocket, her fingers wrapping firmly around the heavy metal grip of a pocket recorder she had switched on the moment they stepped off the elevator.

"Every word you're saying is being broadcast live to the internal security server downstairs, Arthur," Clara said, her voice shaking with righteous fury.

"The detectives are already on their way up."

Arthur’s smirk didn't drop; instead, a slow, mocking chuckle escaped his lips.

"Detectives?" Arthur repeated, raising an eyebrow.

"My dear Clara, do you really think I didn't plan for every contingency?"

Before Clara could process his words, the office phone on the desk shrilly rang.

Arthur tilted his head toward the blinking red light.

"Why don't you answer that, Mrs. Evans?" Arthur taunted softly.

"It’s the night nurse from Lily's ICU room."

Mark released his grip on Arthur’s coat with a violent shove that sent the doctor stumbling back into his leather chair.

Clara lunged across the desk, her trembling hand snatching the receiver off the cradle and pressing it frantically to her ear.

"Hello?!" Clara screamed into the phone.

"Mrs. Evans? Thank god," a frantic, weeping voice of the ICU nurse echoed through the line.

"I don't know how it happened! I stepped out for thirty seconds to check a chart, and when I came back—"

"What happened to Lily?!" Clara shrieked, her heart freezing in her chest.

"She's gone," the nurse sobbed through the speaker.

"Someone in a surgical mask bypassed the security ward, sedated me from behind, and wheeled Lily out through the service elevator. She's not in her room!"

May you like

Clara dropped the phone, the receiver dangling by its coiled cord as the room spun violently around her.

Arthur stood up slowly, smoothing down his white coat with absolute composure, pulling a small, encrypted burner phone from his pocket.
