Chapter 8 - The Abandoned Sanitarium and the Ghost of Sector Four

The rusted iron gates of the Blackwood Estate loomed like skeletal fingers against the stormy night sky, half-swallowed by thick briars and decaying pine trees.
Located thirty miles outside the city limits in an isolated valley, the sprawling property had once been a tuberculosis sanitarium in the 1950s before being legally acquired through a web of shell corporations by Dr. Arthur Vance a decade ago.
The unmarked black SUV crawled up the unpaved, muddy access road without its headlights on, rolling silently beneath the canopy of dead trees.
Inside the vehicle, Mark gripped the steering wheel with one hand while checking the magazine of a heavy-caliber hunting rifle resting across his lap with the other.
In the passenger seat, Clara stared through the windshield at the monolithic concrete structure rising from the fog, clutching the digital recorder and a master key card Harper had given them before breaking down in tears at the precinct.
"This is it," Clara whispered, her voice dangerously calm.
"Sector Four of the basement. That's where he keeps his quarantine units and experimental logs."
Mark shifted the SUV into park behind a rusted maintenance shed, killing the engine entirely.
The silence of the abandoned sanitarium was absolute, broken only by the steady patter of rain against the rotting roof shingles.
"Stay behind me, Clara," Mark instructed firmly, opening his door and stepping out into the mud, pulling his jacket tightly over his firearm.
"If Arthur is here, he won't hesitate to pull a trigger."
"I'm not hiding behind anyone, Mark," Clara replied, sliding out of the passenger side and stepping firmly onto the wet gravel, a small, legal-issue taser clutched tightly in her right hand.
"This is about our daughter. We go in together."
They moved with silent, synchronized precision toward the heavy metal service entrance of the sanitarium.
Using Harper’s master key card, Mark swiped the magnetic strip across the battered digital reader beside the door.
With a faint, mechanical click, the heavy deadbolts disengaged.
May you like
Mark pulled the door open, releasing a cold puff of stagnant, chemical-smelling air from deep within the bowels of the building.
They slipped inside, the darkness swallowing them whole as they descended the concrete staircase into the subterranean labyrinth of Sector Four.
