Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence of a Broken Household

Hadrian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped beast desperate to break free from its cage.

The air in the grand dining room suddenly felt entirely devoid of oxygen, heavy with the metallic scent of spilled wine, broken porcelain, and the lingering residue of pure malice.

In his arms, little Sorrel was shaking so violently that her small frame felt like a fragile bird caught in a freezing tempest.

Every breath she took hitched in her throat, a heartbreaking reminder of the unimaginable terror she had been forced to endure while he was away fighting tooth and nail to secure their family’s future.

He had trusted the woman standing across the room; he had left her in charge of his home, his life, and his most precious treasure, believing her warm smiles and gentle public demeanor.

Instead, that very same woman—the one he had planned to marry upon his return—had transformed his ancestral estate into a personalized house of horrors.

Hadrian slowly lowered his head, pressing his lips against Sorrel’s damp, matted hair, tasting the salt of her endless tears and feeling the protruding outline of her shoulder blades through her thin dress.

She was severely undernourished, her skin bruised in various shades of purple and yellow, bearing the undeniable physical evidence of systematic cruelty.

His mind raced back to the video calls they had shared over the past six months, where the Fiancée—Clarissa—had always stood just off-camera, whispering sweet reassurances and making excuses for why Sorrel couldn't come to the phone.

"She’s just shy, darling," Clarissa’s voice would chime with melodic sweetness, a voice that now made Hadrian’s stomach turn with violent nausea.

"She’s going through a difficult phase, but I’m shaping her into a proper young lady."

Shaping her.

The phrase echoed in his mind like a death knell, taking on a sickeningly literal and horrifying meaning as he stared at the heavy silver chain that still lay discarded on the polished mahogany floor.

That chain had been locked around his six-year-old daughter’s ankle.

Clarissa didn't even bother to untense her posture; instead, she uncrossed her arms and let out a light, mocking scoff that grated against the oppressive silence of the room.

"Oh, please, Hadrian, don't look at me like I’ve committed some unforgivable crime," Clarissa drawled, her tone dripping with an arrogant dismissiveness that signaled a profound lack of self-awareness.

"Children need discipline, especially children of high society who are prone to wild, unruly outbursts."

Discipline.

Hadrian’s gaze shifted slowly from the trembling bundle in his arms up to the woman he had once considered sharing his entire life with.

Clarissa was dressed in a pristine silk evening gown that seemed to mock the absolute devastation surrounding her, her blonde hair styled in an immaculate updo that hadn't a single strand out of place.

She looked like an aristocratic painting, beautiful on the surface yet thoroughly rotten to the core.

"Discipline?" Hadrian’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried an unnatural, icy resonance that caused the air in the room to drop by several degrees.

"You chained her to the floor like an animal."

"She broke my favorite heirloom porcelain set last week, and tonight she dropped a tray of expensive glassware," Clarissa replied defensively, stepping forward with her chin held high, utterly blind to the apocalyptic wrath brewing behind Hadrian’s narrowed eyes.

"Actions have consequences, Hadrian, and if you aren't going to teach her how to behave in this household, then someone else has to step up and do the dirty work."

Hadrian gently set Sorrel down, though he kept one protective hand resting firmly on her back, ensuring she remained safely behind him.

He stood up slowly, his tall frame casting a long, menacing shadow over the shattered plates and scattered food.

His joints popped in the dead silence, the sound unnaturally loud.

"Go to your room, sweetheart," Hadrian said softly, keeping his eyes locked onto Clarissa while speaking to his daughter.

"Lock the door behind you. Do not open it for anyone until I come for you."

"Daddy, don't leave me alone with her," Sorrel whimpered, clutching desperately at the hem of his trousers.

"I won't, my love. I am right here. But you need to go upstairs now. Daddy has some unfinished business to attend to."

Sorrel hesitated for a fraction of a second, looking up into her father’s eyes, where she saw something terrifying yet deeply comforting: a cold, unyielding resolve that promised absolute protection.

Nodding tearfully, the little girl scrambled backward on her hands and knees, avoiding the shards of ceramic, before scrambling to her feet and bolting out of the dining room toward the grand staircase.

Clarissa watched her go with an annoyed eye-roll, clicking her tongue against the roof of her mouth.

"Honestly, you coddle her way too much," Clarissa complained, turning her gaze back to Hadrian as she reached for a glass of champagne from a passing side table that had somehow remained upright.

"If you keep raising her like a wildflower, she’ll never amount to—"

CRASH!

Clarissa’s champagne glass shattered against the wall inches from her head, the golden liquid splashing violently across her expensive silk dress and dripping down to the floor.

She gasped, her eyes flying wide open in genuine shock for the very first time.

"You—how dare you!" Clarissa shrieked, her aristocratic composure cracking instantly under the sudden display of aggression.

"Do you have any idea how much this dress cost? Are you out of your mind, Hadrian?"

Hadrian took three slow, deliberate steps toward her, his face completely devoid of any emotion, making him look less like a grieving father and more like an executioner stepping onto the scaffold.

"You called my daughter a rat," Hadrian said, his voice dropping into a register so low and flat that it sent a shiver straight down Clarissa’s spine.

"You dragged her across this floor by her ankle. You starved her, you beat her, and you turned my home into a concentration camp while I was out earning the money that funds your lavish lifestyle."

Clarissa took a nervous half-step backward, her designer heels clicking frantically against the hardwood as Hadrian closed the distance between them.

Despite her initial arrogance, a cold knot of dread began to form in her stomach as she finally registered the sheer physical and psychological threat standing before her.

"I am your fiancée!" Clarissa protested, her voice rising an octave in frantic self-preservation.

"We are supposed to be married in two months! The media is watching us, the elite are watching us—you cannot treat me like this over a brat who doesn't even know her place!"

"Fiancée?" Hadrian repeated the word as if it were a foul taste on his tongue.

"That title expired the moment you laid a finger on my child."

Before Clarissa could formulate another excuse or raise her hand in defense, Hadrian moved with terrifying speed, his hand shooting out to grip her slender wrist in a vise-like hold.

She let out a sharp cry of pain as the pressure threatened to snap her bones.

"Take me to the basement, Clarissa," Hadrian whispered directly into her ear, his breath hot and lethal.

"Let's see how well you handle a little discipline of your own."
