Chapter 4 - The Midnight Extraction of Mrs. Higgins

The grandfather clock in the main foyer struck 2:00 AM, its deep, resonant chimes vibrating through the silent, sleeping corridors of the Obsidian Estate.

Upstairs in the luxurious staff quarters, Mrs. Higgins sat at her vanity table, carefully applying night cream to her aging face while humming a cheerful tune.

She felt exceptionally secure in her position; after all, Clarissa had promised her a permanent pension and a luxury apartment in the south of France once the marriage to Hadrian was finalized and the troublesome child was successfully shipped off to a boarding school in the Swiss Alps.

Suddenly, the overhead lights in her private suite flickered once and died completely, plunging the room into absolute darkness save for the pale moonlight filtering through the sheer curtains.

Mrs. Higgins froze, her hand hovering over a jar of cream.

"Hello?" she called out, her voice trembling slightly as she stood up and reached for the bedside lamp. "Is someone there? Maintenance?"

There was no answer, only the faint, ominous sound of heavy boots stepping silently across the hallway carpet outside her locked door.

Before she could reach the light switch, the heavy wooden door exploded inward with a deafening crash, splintering the frame and sending wood fragments flying across the room.

Two massive figures clad in matte-black tactical gear, night-vision goggles, and ballistic vests surged into the room with terrifying, military-precision efficiency.

Before Mrs. Higgins could let out a single scream, one of the operatives closed the distance in a fraction of a second, clamping a heavy hand over her mouth while the other expertly zip-tied her wrists behind her back.

"Target secured," the lead operative spoke into his comm-link in a low, disciplined murmur. "Moving to extraction point."

Mrs. Higgins thrashed wildly, her eyes wide with mortal terror as she was hoisted off her feet like a sack of grain and carried effortlessly out of her quarters down the darkened hallway.

They bypassed the main stairs, heading straight down the service elevator that led directly to the subterranean level where the holding cells were located.

When the elevator doors slid open with a soft ping, the damp, freezing air of the dungeon hit Mrs. Higgins like a physical blow.

She was dragged down the corridor past rows of empty, rusted cages until they reached the very last cell—the one currently occupied by Clarissa.

Clarissa was huddled in the corner of the concrete floor, shivering uncontrollably in her ruined silk dress, clutching her arms against the biting cold.

Hearing footsteps, she scrambled to her feet and rushed to the iron bars, her eyes wild and bloodshot.

"Hadrian! Let me out! I swear to God, if you don't—" she stopped abruptly as the tactical operatives hauled Mrs. Higgins into the light and threw her roughly onto the concrete floor beside the neighboring cell.

"Mrs. Higgins?!" Clarissa shrieked, pressing her face against the iron bars. "What is the meaning of this? Why are they treating you like a criminal?!"

Mrs. Higgins, gasping for breath as the hand was removed from her mouth, looked up with tear-filled eyes, her face pale as chalk.

"Miss... Miss Clarissa," she sobbed, looking frantically around the dark, oppressive dungeon. "What is happening? Who are these men?"

From the shadows at the end of the corridor, the slow, rhythmic click of leather-soled shoes echoed against the stone floor.

Hadrian stepped out from the darkness, his expression completely blank, holding a thick manila folder in one hand.

He stopped a few feet away from the two cages, looking down at the shivering women with an expression of profound disgust.

"Welcome to the family reunion," Hadrian said softly, his voice carrying an eerie, hypnotic calm.

"You both worked so hard to keep this household running smoothly. It only feels right that you share accommodations."

"Hadrian, you absolute psychopath!" Clarissa screamed, rattling the iron bars with all her remaining strength.

"You can't do this! You can't just kidnap people and throw them in a dungeon! This is kidnapping! This is illegal!"

"Illegal?" Hadrian paused, opening the manila folder and flipping through a few pages of printed financial transcripts.

"According to these documents, Mrs. Higgins received five thousand dollars every month from your personal account to cover up physical abuse and falsify domestic incident reports. That makes her an accessory to child torture and felony assault."

Mrs. Higgins turned an absolute shade of white, collapsing onto her knees as her legs completely gave out beneath her.

"Mr... Mr. Hadrian, please," she wept, pressing her forehead against the cold concrete floor.

"I had no choice! Miss Clarissa threatened to fire me, and at my age—with my medical bills—I couldn't afford to lose my livelihood! It was all her idea! She forced us to do it!"

"Traitorous rats," Hadrian muttered coldly, closing the folder with a sharp snap.

"You all abandoned a helpless six-year-old child for a paycheck. You deserve every single second of what’s coming to you."
