Chapter 6 - The Fall of Marcus Vance

The digital clock on the dashboard of Hadrian’s armored SUV glowed a sharp 3:15 AM as it tore through the empty, rain-slicked streets of the financial district.
In the backseat, Hadrian sat in absolute silence, his fingers tracing the cold metal surface of his encrypted tablet, reviewing the final piece of the puzzle: Marcus Vance.
Marcus was Clarissa’s cousin, a high-powered corporate attorney whose sleek downtown office overlooked the glittering skyline of the metropolis.
He was the legal architect behind the fraudulent guardianship papers and the mastermind who had systematically drafted the clauses designed to strip Hadrian of all parental rights over Sorrel in the event of an "unfortunate domestic accident."
Ten minutes later, the SUV pulled up directly in front of a towering fifty-story glass skyscraper bearing the illuminated logo of Vance & Associates Law Firm.
The building was locked tight for the night, patrolled by private security guards and monitored by state-of-the-art biometric surveillance systems.
To ordinary citizens, it was an impenetrable fortress of wealth and legal protection.
To Hadrian’s elite tactical unit, it was merely an inconvenience.
Two operatives moved effortlessly through the service entrance, bypassing the electronic locks with a portable decryption device in under thirty seconds.
Within three minutes, Hadrian and his team stepped out of the private elevator onto the forty-fifth floor, stepping onto pristine white marble flooring that smelled of expensive cologne and polished mahogany.
Marcus Vance’s executive office occupied the entire corner of the building, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a panoramic view of the sleeping city below.
Inside, Marcus was working late at his massive glass desk, surrounded by stacks of legal briefs, a half-empty glass of scotch, and the soft glow of dual monitor screens.
He didn't even look up when the heavy oak door of his office swung open, assuming it was just the nocturnal cleaning crew.
"Leave the files on the credenza and lock up on your way out," Marcus said dismissively without raising his eyes from the glowing screen.
"I'm not in the mood for interruptions tonight."
"I'm afraid this interruption is mandatory, Marcus," a low, gravelly voice echoed across the expansive office.
Marcus froze instantly, the blood draining from his face as he whipped his head up toward the doorway.
Standing in the shadows was Hadrian, flanked by two towering operatives in tactical gear whose faces were completely obscured by night-vision optics.
"Hadrian?!" Marcus gasped, scrambling backward in his leather executive chair until it hit the glass wall behind him.
"What... what is the meaning of this? How did you get in here? This is breaking and entering! I will call building security and have you arrested before you can even—"
"Save the legal theatrics, Marcus," Hadrian interrupted smoothly, walking slowly across the room and pulling out the leather chair opposite the desk before sitting down uninvited.
"We both know that the laws you spent your entire career manipulating don't protect men who conspire to kidnap children and falsify guardianship documents."
Marcus swallowed hard, his throat dry, his mind racing desperately as he tried to calculate his exit strategy.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Marcus lied, though his trembling fingers betrayed his absolute terror.
"Clarissa is my cousin, yes, but whatever domestic disputes you two are having—"
Hadrian reached out and slammed a thick, heavily stamped legal document down onto the glass desk right in front of Marcus.
The attorney’s eyes dropped to the paper, and every remaining ounce of color vanished from his face.
It was the master draft of the fraudulent guardianship transfer, complete with Marcus’s signature, his notary stamp, and a paper trail linking his corporate accounts directly to Clarissa’s personal slush fund.
"You drafted the papers to steal my daughter," Hadrian said, his voice dropping into a register so dangerously calm that it felt like the eye of a hurricane.
"You conspired to strip a father of his child while he was working overseas to build a future for this family."
"It was a legal maneuver!" Marcus shouted, panic finally overriding his professional composure as he stood up and tried to tower over the seated man.
"Clarissa said you were neglecting her! She said the child was in danger! As her legal counsel, I merely prepared contingency plans in accordance with—"
Before Marcus could finish his sentence, one of the tactical operatives stepped forward with terrifying speed, grabbing the attorney by the collar of his expensive suit and slamming him down hard onto the glass desk.
The desk groaned under the impact, glasses rattling violently as Marcus let out a choked gasp of pain.
"You don't get to lecture me about legal contingencies," Hadrian whispered, leaning forward across the desk until his face was mere inches from the terrified lawyer.
"You signed away the safety of a six-year-old child for a percentage of my estate. That makes you just as guilty as the animal locking her in a basement."
"Please, Hadrian," Marcus whimpered, tears prickling in the corners of his eyes as the operative tightened his grip on his collar.
"I'll give you everything! I’ll sign over my shares of the firm! I’ll leave the country tonight and never come back! Just don't kill me!"
Hadrian stood up slowly, adjusting his jacket cuffs with fastidious precision.
"Kill you?" Hadrian scoffed, offering a cold, mocking smile.
"Marcus, death is far too easy for someone with your talents. You’re going to spend the next few decades of your life utilizing your legal expertise to defend yourself against federal charges of conspiracy, fraud, and child exploitation."
He turned to his lead operative with a casual wave of his hand.

"Bag him and tag him. Take him down to join the rest of the family in the Obsidian basement. The reunion wouldn't be complete without the legal counsel."
"Understood, boss," Miller replied, hauling the weeping attorney to his feet and slamming a thick black hood over his head.
