Chapter 10 - The Safehouse in the Woods and the Unlocked Flash Drive

The heavy armored G-Wagon bumped slowly along an overgrown, unpaved logging trail deep inside the dense pine forest, its headlights cutting through the heavy evening fog.
The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of indigo and bruised violet as they pulled up in front of a rustic, stone-and-timber hunting lodge.
The lodge was completely hidden from the main roads, surrounded by towering evergreens and protected by an analog security system completely disconnected from the digital grid.
Julian killed the engine, climbed out into the cool evening air, and hurried around to the passenger side to unbuckle Lily from her booster seat.
"Welcome to our new castle, Princess Lily," Julian smiled warmly, lifting her out of the truck and carrying her up the wooden steps toward the heavy oak front door.
"It looks like a house out of my fairy tale books!" Lily beamed, wrapping her arms around his neck as he unlocked the reinforced door and stepped inside.
The interior was warm, rustic, and smelled of cedar, old books, and woodsmoke—a stark, beautiful contrast to the sterile, terrifying opulence of the grand estate they had just fled.
Julian settled Lily on a cozy leather sofa near the stone fireplace, quickly tossing a few logs onto the embers to coax a bright, crackling fire to life.
"Are you hungry, Lily? I think there are some canned soups and crackers in the pantry," Julian asked gently, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.
"Yes, please, Mr. Julian. My tummy is making funny rumbling noises," she giggled softly.
After getting Lily settled with a warm bowl of soup and a fleece blanket, Julian walked over to his heavy leather travel bag sitting near the desk in the corner of the cabin.
He unzipped the side compartment and pulled out a small, encrypted black flash drive—a secondary backup device containing every single financial ledger, shipping manifest, and corporate audit of the Sterling logistics empire.
It was the exact data Victoria’s syndicate handlers had been desperate to steal through the container 714 smuggling route.
Julian sat down at the rustic wooden desk, plugged the flash drive into his secure satellite laptop, and punched in his master decryption password.
The screen flickered to life, displaying a cascade of encrypted files and transaction logs that had been quietly running in the background of his corporate network for months.

As he scrolled through the latest data entries, his eyes landed on a hidden sub-folder labeled Project Janus — Syndicate Operations.
Julian clicked it open, and the blood instantly drained from his face as he read the name of the high-ranking government official who had personally authorized Victoria’s clearance into his social circle.
