Chapter 6 - The Shattered Glass and the Intruders in the Foyer

The sound of shattering glass reverberated through the vaulted corridors of the Sterling Estate, cutting sharply through the quiet sanctuary of the grand library.

Julian stood up instantly, his dark eyes locking onto the heavy oak doors of the library with the sharp, calculated focus of a trained tactician.

"Stay right here in this chair, Lily," Julian instructed, his voice firm yet calm so as not to trigger another wave of panic in the child.

"Don't make a sound, and don't open these doors for anyone except me. Do you understand?"

Lily clutched her woolen blanket tighter around her small shoulders, her big blue eyes swimming with fresh tears as she nodded vigorously. "Yes, Mr. Julian. Be careful."

Julian strode silently across the Persian rug toward the heavy mahogany doors, quietly turning the brass handle to slip out into the dimly lit hallway.

Down in the main foyer, the crisp sound of heavy tactical boots crunching over broken crystal from the shattered chandelier echoed upward through the open second-story landing.

"Clear the lower level! Find the girl and secure the master files!" a harsh, gravelly voice barked downstairs, commanding a squad of armed operatives who had just breached the perimeter.

Julian’s jaw tightened. Victoria hadn't just been a lone operative; she had left the back door wide open for an assault team the moment her wedding cover completely disintegrated.

He didn't have his firearm on him—it was locked away in the biometric safe inside his private master suite upstairs, far out of reach given the current tactical disadvantage.

Moving with absolute silence, Julian slipped down the side service corridor that ran parallel to the grand staircase, using the shadows of the architectural pillars for cover.

Peering down from the upper landing, he counted four heavily armored men in matte-black tactical gear, their faces obscured by ski masks, holding suppressed submachine guns.

They were fan-spreading across the marble floor, sweeping the library, the drawing rooms, and the service pantries with systematic, military-grade efficiency.

"The library is empty! The girl’s not in there!" one of the operatives shouted up toward the landing over his tactical comms unit.

"Check the upper floors! The boss wants that child secured before the local police respond to the silent alarm," the team leader barked back, motioning two men toward the grand staircase.

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. The grand staircase was the only direct route up to the library where little Lily was currently hiding under strict orders to stay put.

He needed to buy time. He needed to draw them away from the second floor before they breached the library doors and discovered the child.

Stepping out from the shadows of the service corridor, Julian grabbed a heavy, solid-brass decorative floor vase from the hallway console table and hoisted it high above his railing.

With a swift, powerful heave, he hurled the heavy metal vase directly down into the center of the foyer floor.

CRASH!

The brass vase exploded against the marble tiles with a deafening noise, sending a shower of heavy metal shards skittering across the room and instantly drawing all four tactical operatives toward the stairs.

"Contact on the upper landing! Move, move, move!" the team leader roared, raising his weapon as he charged toward the staircase.

Julian didn't wait to see them reach the top; he turned sharply on his heel and sprinted down the service corridor toward the back stairs, his mind racing to reach the library first.
