Chapter 8 - The Subterranean Motor Pool and the Escape Vehicle

The subterranean motor pool beneath the Sterling Estate was a vast, heavily fortified concrete garage housing Julian’s personal collection of vintage cars, armored transport vehicles, and high-performance utility trucks.
The air down here smelled of gasoline, motor oil, and damp concrete, illuminated only by the faint amber glow of emergency security lights running on backup battery power.
Julian carried Lily down the steep concrete ramp leading from the wine cellar, keeping her tucked safely against his chest as they scanned the rows of parked vehicles.
"Look, Mr. Julian! The big black truck!" Lily whispered quietly, pointing a small finger toward a heavy-duty, armored Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon parked near the exit blast doors.
"Good eye, Lily," Julian praised softly, unlocking the vehicle with a key fob he had pulled from his tuxedo pocket while crossing the wine cellar.
He opened the heavy passenger door, gently lifting the little girl into the custom leather back seat and strapping her securely into a booster child seat that had been left installed from a previous charity event.
"Stay right there, buckle up, and keep your head down below the window level," Julian instructed gently, closing the rear door with a solid, reassuring thud.
He sprinted around to the driver’s side, pulled open the door, and slid behind the steering wheel, immediately punching the master startup sequence into the dashboard console.
The supercharged V8 engine roared to life with a deep, menacing growl that echoed off the concrete walls of the subterranean garage.
Julian grabbed the encrypted estate comms tablet mounted on the dash, tapping the override button to open the heavy steel exit blast doors that led out to the hidden coastal access road.
BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
A harsh red warning light flashed across the console screen: WARNING: EXTERNAL OVERRIDE BLOCKED. MANUAL CLEARANCE REQUIRED AT SECURITY BOOTH.
Julian slammed his fist against the steering wheel in frustration. The tactical team must have hardwired a digital block into the garage exit controls from the main security console upstairs.
"They locked us in," Julian muttered, his mind racing through tactical alternatives as the distant sound of heavy boots echoing down the concrete ramp signaled that the operatives had found their location.
"Attention in the motor pool! We know you're down there, Sterling! Step out of the vehicle with the girl or we breach the doors!" a loudspeaker blared from the top of the ramp.
Julian looked in the rearview mirror. Two armed operatives were currently descending the concrete ramp, their tactical flashlights cutting through the dim amber gloom.
There was no time to pick locks or hack the digital override system.
Julian shifted the heavy armored G-Wagon into four-wheel-drive low gear, his eyes locking onto the massive, three-inch-thick steel-reinforced security gate at the end of the exit tunnel.

"Hold on tight, Lily! It's going to get a little bumpy!" Julian called out loudly over his shoulder.
He slammed his foot down hard on the accelerator, and the supercharged luxury tank lurched forward with terrifying speed, tires screaming against the concrete floor as it charged directly toward the steel exit gate.
