Chapter 5 - The Locked Bridal Suite and the First Confession in the Library

The grand library of the Sterling Estate offered a quiet, leather-scented sanctuary far away from the chaotic noise of the empty ballroom downstairs where five hundred confused guests were now whispering scandals.

A crackling fire burned brightly in the stone fireplace, casting a warm, amber glow across the towering mahogany bookshelves filled with rare leather-bound volumes.

Lily sat comfortably in the oversized wingback chair near the hearth, sipping slowly from a mug of warm milk laced with honey that Julian had personally prepared in the kitchen.

A plush woolen blanket was draped over her shoulders, helping to chase away the lingering chills of the dark hallway where she had spent the morning trembling.

Julian sat opposite her on a matching leather ottoman, keeping his posture relaxed and open so the little girl wouldn't feel intimidated or cornered by his imposing presence.

"Better?" Julian asked gently, offering a reassuring, warm smile.

Lily nodded, taking another small sip of her milk before looking down into the mug with a hesitant expression. "Thank you, Mr. Julian. You're... you're very nice. Not like the bad men."

Julian’s dark eyes sharpened slightly at the mention of bad men, though he kept his voice carefully controlled. "What bad men, Lily? Has someone been coming to the house when your mom isn't looking?"

Lily looked around the expansive library as if checking to make sure invisible ears weren't listening behind the bookshelves, before leaning forward.

"Mommy’s new friends. The ones who wear dark suits and talk on phones with no numbers," Lily whispered, her big blue eyes wide with innocent fear.

"They came to the apartment three times last week. They told Mommy that if she didn't marry you today and steal the master key to the Sterling shipping docks, they would take me away forever."

The words hit Julian like a physical blow to the chest.

Shipping docks? Master keys? International smuggling?

Victoria hadn't just been marrying him for his social standing and financial status; she had been acting as a plant for an organized criminal syndicate attempting to infiltrate the Sterling logistics empire.

"Did they say what they wanted with the shipping docks, Lily?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a dangerously calm, tactical register.

"They said something about container seven-fourteen," Lily answered innocently, tilting her head. "They said once you put your signature on the customs override, the weapons would be safe."

Weapons. Container 714. The exact same container reference that had nearly destroyed his company weeks ago in a federal investigation.

Julian felt a cold sweat break out across the back of his neck. Victoria wasn't just a gold-digger; she was an active operative in a criminal cartel that had systematically targeted his family business.

Before Julian could press her for more details, a loud, sharp crash echoed from the front hallway, followed by the sound of breaking glass and shattering wood.
