Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of the Perfect Engagement

The tension in the grand hallway crackled like static electricity before a lightning strike.

Victoria realized that her aggressive tone had only deepened Julian’s suspicion, forcing her to rapidly pivot back toward a display of fragile vulnerability.

Tears welled up instantly in her green eyes—a masterclass in emotional manipulation that had helped her scale the highest rungs of New York society.

"Julian, please," Victoria whimpered, her voice cracking as she reached out to clutch the lapel of his black tuxedo jacket with trembling fingers.

"This is the most important day of our lives. You're letting cold feet and a nervous child ruin everything we’ve built together over the past two years."

Julian looked down at her hand on his jacket, feeling no warmth, no love, and no connection—only the chilling realization that he knew almost nothing about the woman he was about to marry.

Their engagement had been a whirlwind romance orchestrated by high-society circles, bonding two powerful real estate families through a union of mutual financial convenience.

Victoria had always presented herself as an independent, graceful philanthropist devoted to children’s charities and elite social galas.

Yet, she had never once mentioned having a daughter. In fact, she had explicitly claimed to have no prior children or family baggage when they first signed their prenuptial agreement.

"We’ve built nothing yet, Victoria," Julian said quietly, gently but firmly removing her hand from his jacket lapel.

"And I am not suffering from cold feet. I am simply a man who demands absolute honesty under his own roof."

Victoria’s jaw tightened, the mask of vulnerability slipping away to reveal the sharp, ambitious businesswoman who always fought to win.

"If you walk away from these doors right now, Julian—if you humiliate me in front of five hundred elite guests waiting in that ballroom—there will be no second chances," she warned, her voice dropping into a harsh whisper.

"Your father’s board of directors will pull their funding from your upcoming commercial development, and you will become the laughingstock of Manhattan."

Julian let out a cold, humorless chuckle. It was a sound that made Victoria take an involuntary step backward.

"You think my father’s board members scare me?" Julian asked, his dark eyes flashing with lethal intensity.

"You think money and social standing matter more to me than the welfare of a terrified child hiding in my hallway?"

Before Victoria could formulate a response, Lily suddenly whimpered from her spot against the wainscoting, her small hand reaching out blindly to grab the hem of Julian’s trousers.

"Please... don't let her take me back to the dark room," Lily sobbed, her voice breaking Julian’s heart completely.

Victoria’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated malice as she looked down at the child.

"Shut your mouth, you little brat!" Victoria screamed, lunging forward with her hand raised to strike the trembling girl.
