Chapter 13 - The Digital Counter-Strike and the Senator’s Press Conference

Down in Manhattan, the towering glass facade of the federal municipal building reflected the blinding midday sun as Senator Richard Vance stepped up to the podium in the grand press briefing room.

Microphones from dozens of major news networks crowded the mahogany ledge, their red recording lights blinking steadily in anticipation of a major political announcement.

Senator Vance adjusted his silk tie, projecting the picture of confident, legislative authority that had won him three consecutive terms in Washington.

"My fellow New Yorkers," Senator Vance began, his voice booming smoothly through the auditorium speakers.

"Today, in light of recent tragic security breaches surrounding the Sterling logistics conglomerate, I am calling for an immediate federal investigation into corporate corruption and illicit arms smuggling."

He paused for dramatic effect, letting the calculated accusation hang heavy in the air for the assembled journalists to scribble furiously into their notebooks.

"We cannot allow reckless corporate entities to endanger our city's ports with unregulated shipping containers. Rest assured, justice will be served, and those responsible will be held fully accountable."

Back at the mountain cabin, Julian and Nick stood watching the live broadcast on the satellite laptop screen, a dark, bitter amusement playing across Julian’s face.

"He’s trying to get ahead of the leak," Nick observed, crossing his arms over his chest. "He wants the public to believe that any upcoming criminal charges against his network are just retaliation from a corrupt shipping boss."

"It’s a classic political playbook," Julian agreed coldly, reaching down to place his hand on the master execution key of the satellite uplink software.

"Too bad for the senator that our playbook includes dropping the entire financial ledger right on his head while he’s standing at the podium."

"Ready?" Nick asked, stepping closer to watch the upload progress bar.

"Execute," Julian commanded, pressing the enter key with absolute finality.

Across the secure decentralized network, the encrypted files containing Senator Vance’s signature, the judicial bribes, and the cartel communications flooded out into the public digital sphere.

Simultaneously, the files were routed directly to every major news anchor covering the senator’s live press conference in Manhattan.

Within ninety seconds, the cell phones of every reporter sitting in the press briefing room began to vibrate aggressively.

Whispers broke out among the front row of journalists as notification banners flashed across their screens displaying the explosive financial ledgers linking Senator Vance directly to the shipping cartel.

One brave reporter in the second row stood up, interrupting the senator mid-sentence.

"Senator Vance! We’ve just received leaked Department of Justice financial documents linking your campaign directly to container 714 and the syndicate smuggling ring!"

The senator’s smooth, rehearsed smile instantly vanished. The color drained from his face as he stared out into the audience, realizing his master plan had just blown up in his face.
