Chapter 7 - The Secret Passage and the Rescue from the Library

The service stairs were steep, narrow, and dark, but Julian knew every single architectural quirk of the ancestral mansion where he had grown up.
He took the steps three at a time, his polished dress shoes hitting the wood with muffled thuds until he burst out onto the second-floor service landing near the kitchen wing.
From there, he cut across the back gallery, slipping through a hidden, wood-paneled door disguised as a bookshelf that led directly into the back corner of the grand library.
The secret passage, built by his grandfather during Prohibition, popped out behind the towering mahogany shelving unit where Lily was hiding.
Julian slipped quietly out of the hidden alcove, his chest heaving with adrenaline as he rushed across the Persian rug toward the wingback chair.
"Mr. Julian!" Lily gasped softly, sliding out from beneath the woolen blanket with wide, terrified eyes.
"Shh, it's okay, I'm right here," Julian whispered urgently, dropping down to her eye level and grabbing her small, trembling hand.
"We have to move right now. Men with guns are in the house looking for us, and we need to get out before they check this room again."
Lily nodded bravely, wiping her tears away with the back of her sparkly lace sleeve. "I won't make a sound, I promise."
Before Julian could guide her toward the secret passageway, the heavy double doors of the library suddenly turned on their hinges with a sharp, metallic click.
Footsteps echoed heavily across the floorboards outside. They had reached the library doors far faster than Julian had anticipated.
Without a second to lose, Julian scooped Lily up into his arms, pressing her small head firmly against his shoulder so she couldn't see the approaching danger.
He dove backward into the hidden wall alcove just as the heavy oak doors of the library swung wide open with a violent slam.
"Clear the corners! She has to be in here!" an operative's harsh voice growled, stepping into the room with his weapon raised and sweeping the space with a tactical light.
Julian held his breath inside the dark, cramped confines of the secret wall space, keeping one hand clamped gently over Lily’s mouth to muffle her breathing.
He could hear the heavy boots of the tactical guards pacing across the Persian rug just inches away from the false bookshelf panel.
"Nothing in here! The room is completely empty!" the guard called out over his comms unit after a tense thirty seconds of searching.
"Damn it! Search the master suite and the bridal quarters! She couldn't have vanished into thin air!" the team leader’s voice crackled back through the radio.
The heavy footsteps receded toward the hallway, the doors clicking shut once more as silence settled back over the grand library.
Julian let out a long, ragged breath, sliding the false wall panel open and stepping back out into the open room with Lily still clutched safely in his arms.

"We need to get to the subterranean motor pool," Julian muttered to himself, his jaw set in a hard, determined line.
"That’s the only way off this estate without running straight into their extraction perimeter."
