Chapter 4 - The Broken Engagement and the Shield of Truth

Victoria’s hand never made contact with Lily.
In a blur of motion, Julian intercepted her wrist mid-air, gripping her forearm in a vice-like grip that made her gasp in pain and shock.
"Don't you ever—ever—raise a hand in my presence again," Julian snarled, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, suppressed fury that shook the very air around them.
Victoria winced, her green eyes wide with pain and disbelief as she stared up at the man she had planned to control by noon today.
"Let go of me! You're breaking my arm!" she cried out, twisting violently to break free from his iron grasp.
Julian released her wrist abruptly, shoving her back a step as if touching her contaminated his skin.
He turned his back on the bride, immediately dropping back down to one knee beside little Lily, wrapping his strong, protective arms gently around her shivering shoulders.
"You're safe, Lily. I've got you. Nobody is going to hurt you or put you in a dark room ever again," Julian promised softly, his voice thick with unshakeable emotion.
Victoria stood rubbing her bruised wrist, her chest heaving as she realized her entire multi-million-dollar deception had just collapsed in a matter of five minutes.
"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Julian," Victoria hissed, her voice trembling with venomous spite as she backed toward the bridal suite doors.
"You think you're being a hero? You don't know the half of what's coming for you. That child... she’s the anchor that sinks your entire empire!"
Julian didn't even turn his head to look at her as she retreated. "Get out of my house, Victoria. And if you know what’s good for you, you won't be here when I come back."
With a furious sob of frustration, Victoria slammed the bridal suite door shut, locking herself inside as the wedding of the year officially turned into an unmitigated disaster.
Julian remained kneeling on the marble floor, gently coaxing Lily into standing up.
"Can you stand, sweetheart?" he asked gently.
Lily sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her sparkly lace sleeve, and nodded slowly. "Yes, Mr. Julian."
"Good," Julian said, standing up and holding out his hand for her small, trembling fingers to grasp.
"Now, let's go get you something warm to drink. And then, you're going to tell me everything about the secret your mom told you to keep."

As they walked hand-in-hand down the grand corridor away from the wedding ballroom, Julian knew his life had fundamentally changed forever.
He had no idea that rescuing the little flower girl had just dragged him into a deadly web of international smuggling, stolen identities, and a family conspiracy far darker than he could have ever imagined.
